I have a 1998 Evo with 115,000 on it and would call that both good and solid. Undergoing its first rebuild and will hopefully be back amongst the living this weekend.

I'm no expert but my last 2 bikes have been evo's, and if there's a next one it will be an evos. They are easy to work on, no computer crap (unless you go EFI), affordable, and still hold their value. If you buy a decent one at a good price, chances are that you'll get your money back if you sell it.

If you like to buy your parts from the MOCO, you should know that they are already bumping up their evo part pricing. Sooner or later they will stop supporting them entirely like they did with the shovels. I don't care though. I never buy more than a gasket or seal from them. LOTS of online stores selling evo parts.

If you can find an evo with low miles that's been loved and cared for, you've got yourself a great reliable bike. Maybe others can chime in with their opinions on the best years.

good luck

Definitely good and solid. Mine is a '98 Springer Softail acquired last year w/3000 miles around 8000 now with no problems. Just wrestled a 21 Metzler on and giving it a day or three to make sure she isn't leaking. You can go many miles on a EVO if you treat it right....

bought my 98 Feb of 08 on a friday with 38,000 miles on it.... took it riding the next day on saturday, and the motor starting sounding like pots and pans in a blender!!! the dealer sent it back to HD and they rebuilt it... since then i have put on 14,000 trouble free miles out the motor. i've had other issues, but not the motor!!!! my only complaint is the power, but i'm working on that!!!

My only experience with the EVO motor comes from my many friends that own and ride them. They seem to be a very reliable and bulletproof motor. I am impressed with their longevity in production and the amount of miles that many of these motors have on them. Getting parts are not a problem. I would rather have an EVO motor than a Twinkie motor if I were going for a Big Twin and I have a terrible craving for a FXR that needs to be tamed. (Although I do kind of like the FXDX Sport an awful lot…just don’t tell anyone. OK?)
