Ok this is weird as hell, but just put the heavy breather on my S&S Super E,
so now 1" on the filter is in the open. I washed my bike saturday, everything was fine saturday and sunday. Monday I went to start the bike and it "coughed" and threw some kind of dust out of the air cleaner, and when it's cold it "chirps" when I rev it then when it's half warm, it only chirps if I punch it. Then when it's warm it seems to go away. Same thing Today I was thinking maybe I got the K&N filter too wet?? but the chirp and dust don't make sense to me.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

***** just replaced the front one, cuz he snapped the exhaust bolt off and had to extract it. Also seaping/leaking from the base of the jugs. I wanted to wait till winter to have the jugs removed and honed out and bottoms honed flat, and stage 2 head work done. Amazingly enough, I've been getting like 10 MPG more than I was before.
Any 2nd opinions?
your rite, it could be much worse, I had the exact same thing happen to me two years ago on my superglide, it kept chirping like a bird, eventually, i had my face down by the motor and the puff of air hit me in the face, The reason it goes away when hot is because everything has expanded and tightens that head gasket up. im sure if you start it cold and feel around youll find right where its leaking. chad.

Just talked to my indy, he said it may be a bad lifter push rod, the roller goes bad and squeeks, and the sound is transmitted up the push rod to the top end of the motor. Hopefully he'll be able to get it in tomorrow. May as well have him hone the cylinders flat and true, and put new rings in, replace all teh gaskets, and send the heads out for stage 2 work. Hopefully I didn't chew up the cam, and hopefully the bottom end is sound. Now I have to either go w/o a bike, or license the XLH883 and look like a circus clown for a few weeks (270 ib 5'11 on a hugger should be pretty comical) Well, keep yoru fingers crossed for me!
Stopped by the dealership today on unrelated business and talked to the service mgr. Especially because of the dust puffing out, he agrees it sounds like a bad head gasket. I still aint gonna ride it till I know for sure though, if it is a bad roller, I don't want to tear up the cam and throw metal shavings through out the block

keep in mind, a bad lifter would do it all the time, not just when you snapped the throttle. I will tell you that I let my bike warm up plenty and rode it a few more weeks with that bad gasket.
A vacuum leak or an exhaust leak will also give you a whistle or chirp too that can go away as things heat up. A vacuum leak could explain the mileage increase. Take a good look at the plugs.
