Best advice right there. Sounds like you are looking for a quick and easy fix. Some times you just have to stop and read the directions.

Not looking for quick and easy, only the options. Plus I don't read so good.

i had one fall off once. put it back on the pulley, take a ball peen hammer and peen the pulley near the ring. it should stay on. if you don't know what a ball peen hammer is, forget about doing this yourself.

I think the manual also states to replace the bolts on the pulley if they are removed for any reason.

Although this is an easy job for anyone at all seasoned in mechanics, it sounds a bit over the head of a rank newbie to tools. You might want to pay a friend dinner or something who is good with tools to help you. (Where are you located?)

I had a 1990 Ultra , and yes it does happen because it happened to me. And they can be fixed . I fixed mine by drilling and tapping holes every 2" apart and using small button head allens to re fasten it . Works fine ,no ballance issues !!

Well, after I found out from the local dealership they charge $100 for a lift in their truck (the shop is 2 miles away) and they'll want to replace the pulley, I think I'll try this job myself. No, I've never "peened" before but I looked it up and I get the concept. Perhaps I'll just order a new pulley - I'll still be $$ ahead. A black one would actually look nice. Anyone have a resource for this?
Also, did a search for rear wheel removal on this site and nothing came up? How is that possible (yeah, I know, get the manuel. In the past I've never seemed to use manuals, just sort of figured things out. If someone has one for an '89 Softail though...)?

The only thing about R/R the rear wheel that I'm not imagining is how to align it properly when I put it back on? Will that be clear or do I need some special tool for this?
Thanks

You should read some older threads about this, they are out there and Google is your friend if you can't find it here.

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/searc...archid=5070530

You will need a lift jack, new bolts for the pully plus
the proper wrench for them, and you definately need the book for your bike. There is a tool you can make out of a coat hanger to do the alignment and it is described in the manual. (Look on ebay/amazon for a used one).
