You may want to consider it, one day when you are out in da middle of Bumfck South Africa and the starter won't catch and you end up being lion droppings...ya, you might want to consider it. lol
If I may chip in here, I am also having starter problems of late. I have a new battery, so that is perfect. But sometimes, not always, my starter just spins without engaging. After a few tries it would suddenly engage and start the bike without problem.
Are these the same symptoms you are having? From preceding posts my understanding is that if she spins the solenoid is OK. Should I be considering a new starter?
Cheers
KC
You do not need a new starter, you need a starter clutch.

Us South-Africans arent scared of loins, we are used to those. Its jealous boyfriends on fast Japanese bikes that worry us, so a bike that wont start can be a bit of a problem when things heat up

Thanks, I will do some more research on that. My starter is the original that came with the bike, so I probably have to get a new clutch from the dealer?
Ok guys, my gel battery will not take any kind of charge at all. I left it on a trickle (2 amp) charge over night and it wont even kick the light on! So I am over here in Germany and need to find a motorcycle shop or get a battery shipped from the states. The gel battery had a date on it from when my choppper was built back in 04. Not to bad but the bike only has about 1500 miles on it.

Ya need to stick a Ultima 127 in da bike, a little easier to stay ahead of those jealous boyfriends. lol
If the pinion engages the ring gear and the starter is turning over, then the clutch is no good. There is some heavy duty clutches out there.
Got my new Ultima starter today. Have a service manual for '84 - '90 Flt/Fxr, when I took the primary side jackshaft bolt, lockplate, I have (2), one facing to bolt head and one facing in to pinion gear off, I noticed that their was not a key for the jack shaft, to tell you the truth I don't remember it from 2 years ago when I swapt out starters. All I recall is tightening down jackshaft bolt. Is my second lockplate supposed to face the key and a cutout in it supposed to mesh w/ key, the diagram I have in my book is not the exact same setup as I have. Thanks in advance.
If the started has a "Flat spot" you might try rotating it manually. You'll have to put your bike in gear, engage the starter, and role your bike forward or backward. Be ready to engage the clutch if your bike kicks! First you should check and make sure you are getting the approprate power to all the right places on the starter. Good luck!
