Default 91 Ultra Fuel Gauge Problem.

I removed the plastic float & fittings,inc.2 wires, from my 91 Ultra Gas tank as I was taking tank of completely. When I replaced everything,I switched the Ignition ON...the Fuel gauge pointer went straight to FULL! I had only about a 1/4 tank of gas in it.After a second dismantle & wire check, ignition ON ... the pointer on the Gauge went straight to FULL again. I removed the plastic float & assembly from the fuel/gas tank and moved the float by hand. The pointer in the Gauge went up & down (Empty-Full) as it normally would. On refitting everything again I now find that the Gauge pointer is still going straight to FULL when Ignition is ON, again even with less than 1/2 tank of gas.
I know there is a cork type gasket round the rim of the fitting on the tank and I was wondering if there could be a "ground" problem with the wire. Any input/advice will be greatly appreciated. Bungo

I haven't had this happen on the bike, but a pegged fuel gauge needle on a car means there is a dead short to ground somewhere in your circuit. I would check for a pinched wire.

Good luck

Thanks shov,I had a feeling that it could be dodgy earth/ground.Will re-chek and look for broken wire at the same time. Bungo

There should be a little brass piece around one of the holes in the gasket. That is a ground. However if it works when you remove it, you may have it in improperly and the tank tunnel is holding the float up. Try wiggling the wires to check for a short. Make sure the wire comimhg from the sending unit has the little non-conductive washer under it. These are some of the more "classic" problems. Hope this helps.
