Looking for general input on rev limiter settings when running with the boys. Recently installed Ultima ignition guidelines recommend 6500 is hard on Harley valvetrain, seems like a safe 5500 bounces the limiter too quickly and needing to short shift while it is still pulling.
So throw me your settings and interested in hearing from the guys that ride like your are qualifying for the pole position and what lifters take the abuse
6,500 sounds too high to me. My S&S 107 will supposedly run to that, except I haven't had the courage to try! If your engine is essentially stock I would have thought around 5,750 to 6,000 at max. I never had a limiter that I knew of when I had my original motor, but seldom ran it up to 5,500.
I am not one of the guys that ride like your are qualifying for the pole position, so it will be interesting to see how well their engines hold up.
The manual with my Ultima engine recommended 5500 rpm and they stated that Ultima engines generally do not make much horsepower beyond 6000 rpms. When mine was on the dyno the fellow mentioned the 5500 rpms as though it was conservative but I feel it's better to err on the safe side.
As for which lifters to use: Our 113 Ultima had 2 of the original lifters go bad within 14,000 - one in each cylinder . I would have changed all the lifters at 10,000 miles but also wanted to change the cam which was on backorder, so I only replaced the bad lifter and although the original oil analysis looked good at 1000 miles by 2500 mile the iron level was back up again. By this time the cam was in stock and I went back in again and replaced all 4 of the lifters and a new cam. The original cam had very little markings on it, but I felt it was better to have no markings and I wanted to try the 7/16 diameter pushrods. I still am not sure if it was a problem with defective lifters or some other problem, I replaced all the lifters with 4 new Ultima lifters and hope to know better in another 10,000 miles. I only have about 1000 miles on the new lifters and did not send in any oil samples to see how high the iron level is. Unfortunately we don't get to ride as much as we would like these days because my wife is forced to work a lot of overtime before she loses her job, so it may be a while before we know anything more.
Thanks guys, I had a very experianced builder set my engine/heads up and with 3.37 and a couple of teeth lowered on the trans pulley, the white RK can sneak up on the light bikes and rpm's isn't a problem, I run with some guys that ride with their hair on fire and I enjoy the sleeper role. Most of the time I let them go but every now and then you have to pull your ***** out of the saddlebags.
I can tell you this, hitting the rev limiter at 6500 will junk a "B" lifter plunger out but just looking for others experiances and parts choices.
Wind it up until the valves near float...All you need to know is valve spring height, coil bind, maximum valve lift and valve seat pressure of the springs at zero lift...The lesser the spring pressure at zero lift the more likely the valve seats will wear...The hydraulic tappets out there today can easily compensate for high valve spring pressure...You don't want that valve bouncing around with a weak spring pressure...170-psi for seat pressure on a street motor won't cause any wear...I'm using S&S triple springs at 180-psi @ zero lift after 15,000-miles with no valve seat issues...As a matter of fact, there is plenty of "pop" to the exhaust after beating on it for at least 10,000 of those 15,000-miles!!!
