Default Burning up stator

Was wondering if anyone has had this problem...Going for my third stator less than 500 miles. My bike is 97 ultra,no fuel injection, just a carb bike now..Changed to a 32 amp system from a 45,now bike shop said it maybe a bad rotor ausing my problem, has new battery, all the grounds good and clean, new regulator..bike only draws 22 amps with switch on..(anyone have a clue)....THANKS for any help

I may check into if the rotor is rubbing against the stator and might have to be shimmed out a bit.

Where are these stators shorting? A careful inspection will show where the insulation is burnt through. Like Flying says, look for rubbing. 3 stators in 500 miles means something else (not the stator) isn't right. Are these Genuine H.D. parts (stator, rotor, regulator)? When was the regulator replaced? Has the current regulator taken out the last 2 stators? An intermittant short elsewhere in the electrical system can also cause this, but that many in 500 miles would be a stretch, and it usually takes out the regulator at the same time (or just prior to the stator).

Rotor look great each time I take it off, here lately been in there alot..no rubbing..Rotor always looks clean,do you think a mismatch in rotors would be a problem, the one is a stock that was on the 45 amp stator, now its a 32 amp stator with 45 rotor is there a different??

One new regulator 2 stator, parts comin from drag specialties from a dealer..went from a 45 amp system to a 32 set up,due to first was a bad regulator..alittle high on price for that setup..now the 32 amp set up cost me a arm and leg..stator are shorting at the coil behind the rotor, stator burned all the way round both times..

A possible cause here, and I'm guessing and completely theorizing now based on my electronics background, so take it as you will, might be the mismatch in the rotor and stator. I don't know if the 45 amp stator is different, but it may have stronger magnets in it. I would think it would have stronger magnets because you have to get the extra capacity from somewhere. A stronger magnetic field will induce greater voltage (and current) in the stator. Perhaps the greater voltage is then causing the insulation to break down. The aftermarket stators such as sold by DS are not as good as the OEM stators, in my opinion based on observations out here in teh w3bz, y0, and also on my personal experience back in shovelhead days (daze). So, perhaps between the two (more voltage induced, weaker insulation) that is causing your problem.

I would have recommended that you just suck it up and buy the original 45 amp system from HD, or change out everything to a 32 amp HD setup if that's what you wanted.

Dr. Hess wins.

Went through the same thing with my wife's FXEF. Finally after 4 stators and 5 regulators, got pissed and bought a new electrical system from Comp-u-Fire. Including the rotor.

Been at least 2yrs. and haven't replaced a single component yet. Before was going about 6 mo. between teardowns for one component or other.

Change it all from one manufacture and your problems will disapear.

Is there any advantage to changing from a 45 amp system to a 32 amp one? Wouldn't you want more electrical capacity/power? The older Evos are the 32 amp and the newer HD's are 45 amp to handle brighter lights, F.I., radios, GPS etc. right? Also I see no mention of single vs. the 3 phase stator/regulator set ups. From what I can glean the 3 phase systems put out more power with less heat and drain on the engine? Is that correct?
