I just had a thought, I just yesterday sold my 02 wide glide at a very good price( a price I thought nobody would pay) it was a rocket and looked good and as far as I was concerned the best twinkie year they put out still having the timken cramk bearings. I could have road it any time in the past couple of years but always chose to ride the 21 year old bike with history and heart, I could easily sell it now and have more than enough cash to by a newer twinkie but choose to put more cash into the old girl with its special character that stands out from all the rest. I know my bike like the back of my hand and know that I don;t need any hi tech scopes to read codes to keep her going.

Well I was just wondering if their was any real specific tangible reasons i.e. vibration / weaknesses / ease of repair that kinda stuff, as far as HP and performance goes that’s NOT even worth mentioning considering Harley Davidson and the term “High Performance” in the same sentence is kind of an oxymoron. If performance was an issue I would have bought a Yamahog V-MAX with it’s over 200hp of chew u up and spit u out HP, I only bought a Harley Davidson for it’s kick back ride in style format.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my Harley for what it is “a cruiser”.

Depends what you mean by high performance. Yeah, you'd be hard pressed to get a Harley anywhere even close to V-Max performance. Harleys aren't built to run low-10 QMs or go 180 MPH. You put a huge aftermarket engine in one and it will be much faster than a stock bike - but not anything like a V-Max. Not even close - unless you spend $30K on a racing engine. But then you'd run into suspension and handling issues. Harleys just ain't made for that kind of riding performance.

But you can do a lot with a cam, head work, exhaust, big bore, etc. to get a lot more performance from an Evo, or a twinkie.

But us old farts don't have our Harleys to beat everyone out there from stoplight to stoplight. If we were into that we'd all ride a V-Max... or maybe a V-Rod Muscle.

I once owned a 1985 Kawasaki ZL900 Eliminator that would do honest sub-11 QMs, go 0-60 in 2.7 seconds, and would beat just about everything out there 0-100 - back in 1985. It was a whole lot of fun... (not too comfortable though)... when I was in my late 20s and 30s and still bulletproof and stupid.... Well, more stupid anyway!

But now I like my big "full-figured" gal, Bertha. I can pack a lot of gear in her saddlebags and Tour Pak on a long trip - and never have to strap anything on her... something to be said for that.

As you get older, and survive to get there if you're careful and lucky, you learn that it's not all about getting where you're going as fast as mechanically possible... it's about ENJOYING THE RIDE on the way! That's why they sell a lot more Lexuses, Infinities, Cadillacs, etc. than they do Porsches and Corvettes. Creature comforts! We old farts LIKE those!

Ya I think I did, it seems it's just more of a choice in nostalgia verses technology then anything else.

But in my research I did hear the crank bearings on my 08 96cid are a little weak, so I think I will address that, as far as the timing system goes I hear that has now been fixed in the twin cam motors.

and I would have to agree, "It's all about the ride" hope know one takes my previous post wrong, I was just stressing the fact that my bike is just meant to be a cruiser, nothing more.

I agree. (Not that there's anything wrong with that)

Had an 03 FXD and 01 WG, and they were great bikes. But my 98 WG with the cam and heads done and stuff, well it is a different animal. something a bit raw and unrefined, and responds to attention.
My sister is a horse person, and in conversation one night she said when she gives her horse extra attention and affection, and maybe the odd treat, the horse will surprise her and do the unexpected. Same for an EVO.
Have fun with yours.

If your speaking of big bikes (baggers), the 97-98 Evo's are close to the same technology as the 2008, Delphi efi took over but the M&M efi still works. 2 cams to better the push tube geometry, this didn't distance the TC and not turning 7000 rpm's. O2 sensors that safley run afr @ 15-1, made EPA happy but in the real world it cooks your thighs. Less vibrations, ask the ladies about this one.
Maybe technology of radios's, cd players, mp3 has advanced. Stiffer swing arm (Evo's had problems), 1" rear axle, so changes were made. I think Evo's sound like tractors, TC's sound like helicopters and will finish on what makes you happy in your choice but mentioning custom GPS holders will put you on probation in the Evo section.
