Trany fluid has an unusual smell totally different than prim fluid Put a mirror under the bike so you can see the backside of the inner prim look at the seal where the trany shaft goes into the inner prim If that seal is leaking you can sometimes see it running down the backside of the inner prim Also the comp nut off the engine should be 11/2 in
If you get a pressure washer in behind the inner primary and wash down the shifter link seal that will rule that out, and if your going as far as pulling the clutch to do the inner seal and big O-ring you will want to replace the shifter seal at the same time, just my experience.
does anyone by chance know what size sockets i need for the main clutch hub nut and the front primary sprocket? I'm assuming that these are big ones like my Ironhead
just wanted to let you guys know that it was (i think) the starter seal that was leaking,,,,,,,
the trans seal looks real nice as did the O-ring at the engine (although I still bought new ones for those spots)
the starter seal was actually split into 2 pieces
once I found an 1/4" allen wrench long enough to pull the starter off (it's a little tight to get in the on the FXR due to the oil tank being there) everything else came apart no problem.....really nice having that splined clutch set-up
I need to run up to the fastenal store (or maybe harley) today for a few tabbed lock-washers before I can put it back together
Could it be one of your base gaskets leaking? I thought my primary was leaking when I first bought ole Blue, but it turned out to be the base gasket on the rear jug. Just a thought.

Did you change the shifter seal since you had great access to it? I use a allen head socket with extentions to remove and install the starter.

i knew i had allens that were long enough...it was just a matter of figuring out which toolbox they were in...
I've got stuff here...stuff at the shop..stuff at work..stuff at my dads..etc
I would have done the shifter seal if I had one.....there is forwards on mine and whoever put those on put a plug in that hole and has it sealed up very well
i might be able to get an hour or 2 on it tonight....
it's all the way apart and everything is cleaned up ready to go back together (I was able to get those tabbed washers from my indy..I called classic HD to see if they had them and the guy says "yeah" so I told him I'd be out...by the time I got there 20 minutes later the "shop" guys had snagged them leaving me SOL .....so I spent my money at my indy http://www.scottulrichcycle.com/ where I should have went to begin with ..........he not only had them in stock but charged me 1/2 of what the stealer wanted to)
