Default See! See! It's already starting!

This is how it goes down with me..............
I sold my '07 Ultra to pay for the kids college books, a new furnace, $$ for the ALL the cars parked in front of my house.
("Dad my car needs tires... Dad my brakes are making noise.... Dad I don't have nay gas and I don't get paid til Friday".......)
Kids you can't throw them in the river anymore (EPA get's mad).
So, it breaks my heart, but I sell my baby, (I'm down to a mear 3 bikes now! this can't be!)
Pick up a '90 Electra Glide to hold me over til the kids are gone (2 years, not that I'm counting).
So, I'm looking at the threads here and see one about a S&S motor...
"hmmmmm, let's look on E bay".
I see a few that I can afford (well almost)
Now, there really isn't anything wrong with my mill, it only has 16,000 on it as a reman from Harley, so it isn't like I NEED one.....................,but
The only weak spot on my '90 is the trans, can't find neutral, sometimes shifting is so-so, (I think it's mostly me, but.....)
"Well, let's see what Baker offers"..............
A 7 speed cool!
So here it starting all over agian, a bigger S&S motor, a 6 or 7 speed tranny, some of the chrome is, well, "aged", might as well swap that out, the list grows each time I look at the bike.
This is what I do, instead of "just riding it" here I go, dropping ton-o-bucks into it, (although when the kids are gone I go and buy my brand new, 0 miles, this smells like a new bike Harley), this one WOULD look cool with a side car rig!
There I go again!
Joe
Why can't I just leave it alone?? Just ride it??

Now Joe, take a deep breath - count to ten! I have an S&S 107 in my 1990 FLHS (owned the bike from new). It has the original and stock trans and clutch still. The only concession to the bigger motor (just over 100 HP and TQ) is a Barnet clutch spring. I plan replacing my original clutch cable with one of the swish new Silverline ones, which should improve action.

So rather than spending big money, check things over, fit easy new stuff (like new cables), change oils, adjust things just right and ride it. By all means fit a bigger motor, but they do not need other expensive stuff unless you go really BIG! My S&S has automatic decompressors, so even my starter is original and stock.

Pish Posh...
What's the sense of owning a bike if you can't make her your own?! Swap it out if it's swapable...chrome it if it's chromable (is that a word?)...Shiny and powerful and loud and FAST...and Don't forget Beautiful!!! Yeah, buddy!

But seriously, the dreaming is half the fun isn't it? Especially when the weather doesn't cooperate and you can't ride...how better to spend your time than checking out ebay, craigslist, J&P etc.?

Now go out there and find some more deals!

If you are having trouble shifting the 90 model, check the clutch. The 90-97 models have a spring plate in the clutch pack. It is two steel plates separated by spring steel spacers. The rivets will start falling out and cause clutch/shifting problems. My 96 did this at about 80k miles and I would have sworn the problem was in the transmission. New clutch installed shifts like new.

The only thing on the face of the earth more pathetic than a stock Harley, is a stock Harley that's in need of work. Fix that thing up in a way that will make you happy....don't look back.

I agree!
But you know I'm at that cross roads..............
Keep this as my commuter/small trip/play bike and get a new one for (hopefully). my "Take America cuz I'm a Empty Nest-er"! or...
restore this one and make it my "full time ride" and keep the other 4 bikes for "stuff"???????????????
I've got a pile of "other things" to knock off before I tackle the motor/trans update, (the motor is fresh, I ran a compression test, cylinder leak down, we're in fine shape), so it isn't a case of "I NEED A MOTOR NOW", (hence why all the good deals seem to be popping up, when I NEED a motor or...... there isn't ANYTHING to be found)
I ordered a new windshield, parts book yesterday, (I love looking at parts books!! I should have been a parts man instead of a maintenance super)!
There is a bunch of nuts and bolts that look crappy as well as some rust here and there that needs to be addressed.
I SWORE I was just gonna keep this bike running, not do this, but it pains me to see a bike that needs attention!
Joe
"What do you mean I don't have a balance on any of my charge cards???
How can I single handley keep America moving if I don't buy stuff? Outta my way I got to get to the Harley dealership before it closes"!
