another thought......retard the timing just a hair. my 89 would diesel when i first brought it home, after i set the timing properly, it hasnt done it since.

Probably not enough compression to cause real desieling so most likely you have a hot spot. Most likely on a valve. Especially one that's not closeing all the way due to carbon build up.
