I just saw a thread on Facebook about running 2 stroke oil in your gas tank. A very small amount to help lubricate things. Does anyone do this? Never heard of it before.
I think a small amount will not hurt. When I raced dirt bikes, all I had around were 5 gallon cans of 2-stroke fuel. I ran that in my lawn mower for a number of years. That mower never failed to start and was pushing 20 years old when I upgraded to self propelled!! I don't know if I would run a steady diet of that in my fuel, but if I had to run some, I would not hesitate.
I don't think it would hurt other than negatively affecting how the gas burns and makes the combustion chamber dirty by putting oil in where it isn't needed. Nor do I think it would help to negatively affect how the gas burns and makes the combustion chamber dirty by putting oil in where it isn't needed.
Never add anything to tank except fuel. All you are doing is adding carbon to top side of motor. The pistons and cylinders get all the lubrication they need from bottom.
As a side note, a two stroke takes the oil mix into the engine into the crank case and up thru the one way reed valves before entering into a open port in the cylinder wall when the piston is at its down stroke. Most of the oil has dropped out of the lighter fuel mix. That is how the crank bearings get lubrication in a two stroke. The rest of the oil pretty much cooks on top of the piston and goes out with the exhaust.

this circulates around automotive forums from about the dawn of time. Marvel Mystery Oil, 2 stroke oil, ATF, etc, etc, etc. While it most likely wont hurt anything, it also likely isnt helping anything either. It does add (obviously) oil to the fuel that is said to "lubricate the valves", but if you have a sticky valve issue, you have larger problems. The oil can and will cause excessive carbon buildup in the top end on the valves and in the combustion chambers and piston crowns. IMO, and YMMV, its snake oil, or more specifically an old mechanics tale
