Default '88 FXRS engine stageing

I'm Looking to do some work on my newly aquired scooter. Looking for some advice on what parts to go with for my stage 1 and stage 2 upgrades. And how far it needs to go. Thinking of a thunderheader (not a fan of the look but told it's good for the performance, I'd rather have some fishtails but oh well) for the exhaust system, has an S&S carb. (don't know if that's good enough or should change it), then on this late of a model do I need to mess with the ignition system and coils?

Welcome to HDF from the UK. With an S&S carb it sounds like your bike already has stage 1 or more already. Bikes from that period benefit from a replacement air filter (already done on yours) cam and replacement mufflers. A replacement ignition module is also worthwhile, to give a better advance curve.

I suggest you check your bike over as you may find it is already where you would like it to be! Do you have any service history with it? As for an exhaust I've just bought a SuperTrapp SuperMegs for my 1990 FLHS. Looks fine to me and tunable for the amount of 'sound' you want.

Okay well after looking online and finding out what all I believe consist of the Stage 1 here is what I have found.

Went over my bike, it has a Screamin Eagle 8000 RPM 32421 - 85B 1340F for the Ignition Module. So I'm guessing that's been upgraded and is good to go. As stated before has the S&S Carb on it so that's done. Plug Wires are screamin Eagles as well I replaced them myself. Also the Plugs them self are new HD plugs. As for the Ignition Coil I can't read any of the markings on it or the S/N to tell what brand or anything, so don't know about it. (dose it realy matter if the Coil is stock or not?) As for the Exhaust it dose not seam to be anything special looks like they may have changed them out before they sold back to the dealer. So that seems to be everything for the stage 1 from what I read. I'll just need to change out the Exhaust. If I'm missing something or off track please fill me in.

As for the stage 2, from what I'm ready that is only changing out the Cam's and milling the heads. Or is there more then that? Also is there any way to tell if this has been done already? I realy don't know to much bout what I'm looking at.

After this is there anything special I should be looking the do for the engine?

Thanks for the assistance....

It is quite likely with that ignition module fitted there is already a different cam in there. No point fitting it without a change! Just possible it has also had some head work. Exhausts are a matter of taste, but it is obviously easy to change that for something you like. A 2-into-1 should work fine and looks good if you like a sporty look! My nice new shiny SuperMegs has just arrived for my Glide and I am admiring it, still in its box!

Other than the exhaust I really suggest you start riding it. If you plan tinkering with it over the winter you could take the heads off to see what they look like, also check the cam, but it seems a safe bet the bike will run fine as it is. Once you start riding it regularly you will be able to form ideas for further improvements to it.

I've started to get out on it now that the winter has hit. Out here in AZ it's kinda turned around you stay away from the summers. There just to damb hot.

Thanks for the input. I think I have a broke ring so I'll have the mech. check it out when he opens her up to change that out.

It's a pleasure! Now if you could ship out some of your 'cool' riding weather over here that would be just great!

I have that same SE ignition module. It's a good one and made a big difference in performance, even with the stock cam.

It sounds like the bike is pretty well set up now. Ride it a while as it is, or play with the exhaust some before you start "stage 2ing" it.

Well got the diagnosis from the Mech. Looks like it's needing a top end rebuild. He said seems to still have to stock cam's in it. so he is sending the top to the machine shop and then will get her all fixed up.

I know you all said to ride it a bit before I change out the cam's however, since he has it already opened up should I go ahead and have him change them out? Looking to save some money here. If so what all should I be expecting him to change out when he dose the new cam's? Bout how much more it should tag on to the end amount? Wouldn't he need to change out the push rodes?

Well put her in the shop and had the top end rebuilt and cam changed out with the EV 27. Seems to have solved my problems. Until next time. She is running fine and I'm enjoying the ride. Good thing it was 80 degrees out today.

Next step save some more and then........

Thanks for the input..
