Ignition Choices

Hi All!

I am starting to gather parts for replacing my cam and lifters this winter on my 95 FXDL. Going with an EV-27 cam or something real close to it. Bike is at stag 1 now other than that it is stock. People have been recommending that I swap out the stock ignition. I have been looking and reading what I can on the ignition choices but am a bit confused. Is there really a big difference with going with an all in the nose cone ignition rather than a separate box?. Do the nose cone modules burn out faster?

With everything else being stock, is it worth the money to change it out?

Nose cone ignitions can "burn out" faster than remotes. Nowever if the exhaust is close enough to damage the nose cone ignition, it can also damage the stock pick up used with the remote ignitions. Some after market pipes come very close to the nose cone and add lots of unwanted heat to that area, and usually is the prime reason for ignition problems in many cases.
The main plus in aftermarket ignition systems is higher rev limits, and adjustable curves that allow tuning your engine to any changes you make or will make.

Just use a Sportster module and you'll get a better advance curve and a higher rev limit for bugger all money.

On a stage 1 bike an aftermarket ign system is largely a waste of money.....a good rider is worth 40 HP anyway.

I have built 130HP bikes for people who couldn't ride to save their lives :-)

i would go with a single fire if i was going to spend the money . your bike will idle.smoother and run better. both ignitions will work .im running a dyna 2000 module under the seat .six years and no problems. good luck with your project!!

I am all about ripping out the complexity of stock ignition systems and installing a complete unit in the nosecone..

Benefit is: Less complexity resulting in easier troubleshooting, less points of failure, less wiring, and better performance...

Disadvantages: NONE!!

Parts are cheap and easy to find and troubleshooting is soooo easy!

But each to his own....I am "Mr Stock", most aftermarket parts (except EV27 Cams) give me a head ache

Do you know what year Sporty modules would work? One of the things I am being told that if I go with a nose cone unit, that if there is an issue while on the road I could have issues getting parts. I don't do a lot of traveling so I am kind of dismissing this for now.

I am just trying to figure out the best way to spend my winter budget.. I am doing the cam, lifters inner cam bearing, quick install pushrods, New tires and wheel bearings and getting my rims powder coated.
