The full VIN is 17 characters long and is on the frame. Depending on the year of your bike that may be on a plate on the frame, or stamped into the frame, on the right-hand side of the steering head/neck.
The shorter engine number is usually at the base of the cylinders and contains some of the same characters in the full VIN. On big twins this is on the left-hand side of the engine, may be the other side on Sportsters.
