Default Oil Pressure Intermittent?

Hi Folks,

Sixth ride on a '97 King w/ 103 kit w/ 3,500 miles on it. Also sixth ride on a H-D, so the need for input.

The bike has run flawlessly. Has no leaks. Valvetrain is quiet.

Went out for a 40 mile run yesterday with a few miles at 100 MPH with no problems. As I said, the bike has run flawlessly (and still does).

We made a stop for 1/2 hour and when I restarted the bike I looked down at the oil pressure guage and it was still on the Zero peg. The engine sounded normal and oil level was fine. The pressure would raise to 15 psi on rev. I decided to limp home, keeping an eye on the guage.

By the time I was back on I-17, the oil pressure was normal.

The guage is a mechanical, glycerin-filled unit (but shows its age). The oil looks like it could use a change (and I will do that), but I would expect the oil to break down when hot - not cold.

I will open the oil pump and inspect it as I have no idea of its condition.

Is this an indicator of an H-D specific problem (to come) or am I just one of the "lucky" ones who got an intermittent problem? Thoughts?

Thanks to all,
-John

Before pulling the oil pump try a differnt guage, you may also need an oil change, oil may be broken down.

Pull the gauge off and clean the passage behind it, it may be "gunked up". Then check the gauge before getting into the pump. Let us know what you find there.

Sending unit? I not home so I don't have my manual handy. I am not sure if there is a test for it.

Ditto on checking the gauge first, I work with hydraulics quite a bit. Most of machines have their own gauge, but we use a calibrated gauge on a port to get true values.

Not sure if that engine has a screen under a plug at the oil pump like the older evo`s but if it does, pull it out & check it. Also confirm that you have the proper oil filter on the bike. Check every rubber oil line for kinks that might restrict oil flow.
If the bike has an oil cooler & a thremostat, bypass them & re test oil pressure.
Hatch.

Thanks for the replies.

Sounds like all common-sense stuff. Work won't allow doing anything for a bit, but I'll get to it and let 'yall know what the problem was.

Thanks, again.
