I have a 97 electraglide standard that will lose power and shut down around 70 mph. I can ride over a hundred miles without a problem as long as I stay below 70.When this occurs I can press in the clutch and rev the engine, but as soon as I release the clutch it spits and sputters. Sometimes if I shut it off and restart it it will ride normal again. It is intermitant ,but as long as I don't go over 70 I don"t appear to have a problem.Any ideas are greatly appreciated. I put this thread in evo classic hoping someone has run into this before. It is frustrating riding on the highway and all of sudden the bike starts bogging down. I am planning trip to North Carolina in July and need to figure this out before I go. The bike is a lot more comfortable than my Dyna Wideglide for long trips. Please Help
I removed the screen in the tank. I rebuilt the carb a few months ago because the accel pump was dried and cracked. I should have added this earlier but wanted some ideas of what else it could be.
My bike did this once going up a steep hill into a head wind doing more than 70mph , it felt like the motor shut down, I atributed to rev limiter. New Ultima ignition is on the work bench ready to go in. I figure it sure can't hurt.
I noticed that you said you removed the screen in the tank. Possibly you have some crud in the carb, as most older tanks now have some rust in them. Remove the float bowl, float, needle, jets, and jet holder. Flush and blow everything out then reassemble it. Then put a fuel filter in the line. Also if you have access to a vacuum pump, put some vacuum on the petcock after you have unhooked the fuel line at the carb and let the gas flow into a glass jar. You should have a steady stream. Sometimes after a carb has been off of the engine and replaced, as thet line is pushed onto the carb pieces of rubber get flaked off of the hose and get into the carb.
Lastly check the vacuum lines for a leak. If they are leaking then the petcock and VOES wil not be working as they should.
I think John might be on to something, didn't they have trouble with the vacume diaphram in the stock petcock getting a small hole and not opening up all the way.
