Because they cannot recommend anything alse.

I use Mobil1 ATF220 in a pretty old EVO - 1988, more than 70k miles on it. It works great. Just read my previous posts here.

Take a look at the bottom of this page.

Default Dumb question but..

Ok, I have read these posts about atf in the primary. My prob is I am new to the harley world. I went to the local dealer other day to get all my fluids so I could change them. They gave me HD trans and primary fluid two qts of it. I changed it in my trans case and topped off the primary. Did I screw up? It looks and smells like 90 wt to me. If it will shift better with reg ATF then Im drainin it and changing. Just tell me I didnt put wrong thing in it.

no no no

you did fine........

that's the "OFFICIAL H-D" lube of choice for the primary AND the trans....

H-D does not make a seperate lube for the trans and the primary anymore so they gave you the "MOCO recommend" one......

not a big deal.....

while I don't run it in my primary or trans it's not really the "wrong" thing...make sense?

if you want to try gear oil in the trans and ATF in the primary .........or "harley" trans lube in the trans and ATF in the primary.......or ATF in both holes...or baby oil in your trans and olive oil in your primary...etc...etc,go ahead

by all means experiment, read the threads to see what is working well for other guys and make your own decision on what you feel works well for your particular combo/riding style and that you feel comfortable running at a price/availability standpoint you can live with...

the most important thing is to KEEP IT CLEAN and at the RIGHT LEVELS....

welcome to the board and we hope you enjoy yourself...

(the above was meant to be humorous.... DO NOT put olive oil.baby oil, whale oil, baby seal oil ,massage oil,"adult" warming oil,or any other bizarre products in your bike

I was like alright! I just happen to have a stockpile of baby oil left over from a weekend that didnt happen! I may still change the primary tho because all I did there was top it off. Thanks for the reply tho.

it couldnt hurt.....

do you know the right level to fill your primary up to? since you topped it off i'm assuming you do.....

on the FXRs pre-90 and 90+ are slightly different levels... your bike may be different

FWIW I run straight 50WT in both holes of my 75 ironhead (they do not have a separate trans) so "the great oil debate" is not exclusive to the more modern bikes.....

in all actuallality baby oil PROBABLY would work just fine..although I wouldnt recommend it ...but if it came down to where i had a dry primary and was stuck somewhere with just a bottle of it (not as likely since I've given up strippers for lent) i'd sure as **** put it in there just to get home

good luck with using it tho

I have to say I like the idea of 3 holes, 3 oils, after all it was Harleys original plan.
Apparently Bel Ray will be no longer available in Europe due to re-structering and I found a shop that has a stock of Bel Ray Primary, Transmission and engine oils at a discounted price so I think I will try the primary and tranny oils to see what they are like. I have enough HD engine oil for change.
On engine oils, this shop has ordinary (I presume mineral), semi and fully synthetic oils, all Bel Ray, again as I am old school and my bike is old, 1986 FLST, made long before any type of synthetic oils, which would you use???????
Cheers
TC

There were synthetic oils in '86. Mobil 1 has been around since the 70's, at least. The HD oil at the time was "ordinary" and is what I use today. As has been stated before, my bike doesn't like fully synthetic oils. If you don't want to use HD conventional oil, then I would use another good quality 20W50 oil. I don't like Castrol. I've blown a couple motors that had Castrol GTX 20W50 in them. MAYBE it wasn't the oil's fault, but I consider the stuff jinxed, at least for me. And one of those motors did blow from a spun rod bearing.
