Default Clutch and Such

Before I did my 5K, I was running Mobil1 gear oil in the tranny and whatever the dealer put in my primary at my 1K. Things were running smoothly. For my 5K I again used Mobil1 in the tranny and put Formula+ in the primary. Shifting is now noticeably rougher and feels kind of grindy, for lack of a better word. I know the weather's been alot cooler and things do get a little better as the bike gets hotter. However, it's still subpar. I tried a clutch adjustment to see if it would help (just guessing on that) and it still didn't make much difference.

Assuming that Mobil1 was working fine in the tranny before, would the fluid in the primary cause something like this? Or should I be looking at something else? I know it's simple to just drop the primary fluid and try another, but, I thought I'd ask first.

I've found with my bike (02WG 71k)that good old fashion harley dino gear oil works good in the "primary". I do however run Mobil1 in the engine and harley syn in the tranny. I use the dino oil because it seems to give the right amount of friction during clutch engagement and disengagement so it make forsmoother shifts, and that thick ole stuff sticks good on the chain and sprockets etc.---jack

Agree. There are a lot of different lubes that work great in the engine and tranny, but the dino seems to provide the best friction for clutch and primary.

So could the fluid in the primary affect the ease of shifting?

I noticed the harding shifting afterchanging outthe fluids at 3,500 miles. I also use Mobile 1 Syn 75-90 lube in thetransmission and HD Primary/Transmission fluid in the primary.

yep; the amount of drag can keep the gears in the trannymoving (relative to each other)a bit and makes smooth shifting harder. Try going back to the dino in the primary and see if that doesn't help------jack

So check this out...

I went to the Dealer to see if I could find some dino lube for the primary. First thing I did was ask Service what they put in the primary at the 1K service since, after putting Formula+ in it, I'm not happy. He pulls up my account and tells me they didn't change the fluid in the Primary. Just the engine oil!!! WTF? OK, that will be another issue I will have to deal with. Anyway...

Not only is Formula+ the only tranny/primary lube they carry other than Syn3, they say Formula+ is the stock primary fluid (which, if you read above, is what was in there for 4,700 miles). To your knowledge, is Formula+ the stock fluid? If this is the case, then I may need to bring it in for a warranty once-over. I can't imagine they would put up a fuss since they told me they didn't change anything other than the engine oil 4,300 miles ago.

All I know is Harley provides two types of oil, Syn 3 and Dino. The dino is a pretty clean high grade oil. The oil specified fo tranny and primary is designed to provide the best friction between plates and I guess good tranny lube. There are better tranny and engine oil detailes around this site. I doubt if there is a better primary, clutch fluid.

Check your primary chain adjustment...that has a lot to do with how smooth it shifts.
