Default B&M Trick Shift for the primary

Heard all kinds of hype about B&M trick shift in the primary !! I am wondering if any one has some feed back on it . I run a 1996 FXDWG and thinking about it for my bike.

B&M Trickshift is a high priced version of F Type automatic tranny fluid, nothing too special about it. Don't know how it would be considered an excellent lube for a primary, allthough its about as good on clutches as F Type tranny fluid, I including many others use F Type in auto drag cars because of the excellent friction coefficient in auto tranny clutches, but we all use the cheapest F Type we can buy.

I have run ATF in the primary for quite a few miles now(many thousands). IMHO the regular Dexron II/III gives a little better clutch feel then the B&M and it's a hell of a lot cheaper then the B&M. Sometimes more $$ doesn't = a better result. ATF works much better for clutch operation then any regular oil ever could. It's what it is designed for. The ATF lets the clutch discs fully release whereas with oil the discs tend to want to stick together.
Just like any oil thread though you will get many opinions.

I've had it in my ride for 5,000 miles and compared to regular oil it is better. But I'm going to try the Dexron II/III when I change it next month. The primary is a pretty simple beast and I think it's probably more important to have the cable adjusted correctly than what type of fluid you use.

Not sure how you ride your Wide Glide, but ATF is also a hydrualic fluid (that is pumped). While it may let the clutch plates separate quicker the primary is not a hydraulic system. If your clutch is not slipping or dragging why change from what is recommended. Even then, changing the type of oil won't cure worn friction plates or a grooved clutch drum. If you are only looking to increase your operating costs, there are many options.

What brand and how often do you change it. I used to run ATF in my old air cooled ATC trans/clutch. Dexron would seem pretty cheap, curious as to why would you want to change to a more expensive ATF.

I used to run the basic HD primary chaincase lubricant and the HD semi synthetic transmission oil. I changed them both at the recommended service interval which was 5,000 miles. I recently went to buy more of the HD semi synthetic trans. oil and found it had been discontinued. Now they have a product called Formula+ that can be used in both the primary and transmission. It does not cost any more than what I was paying before @ $7.29/qt. This Formula+ does not say semi synthetic on the bottle. At first I did not want to change from semi syn to mineral based oil in the trans. (the basic HD primary oil was never semi syn). My trans oil and primary oil has always come out clean as the day I put it in. I began to think I was changing it to frequently because of this. I figured I could go 8-10K easy. The Formula+ interval has been bumped up to 10,000 miles for both the trans. and primary. I have not used it yet...I'm still using the remainder of what I had on hand.

i had 69K on my 01 when i traded for my 09. i used synthetic ATF the full time i owned the 01 and i changed the primary on the 09 to ATF at 500 miles. many of the indie shops around here use ATF for their servicing.
