Default Intake leak, loose fitting carb

I had trouble chasing an intake leak on my evo so I bought an intake gasket kit and installed it. It was still acting up and I chased the problem around until I came back to the carb. I'm running the stock carb and I noticed that it fit a little loose in the manifold. Just to test I put two wraps of electrical tape around the carb where it goes into the manifold. It fit way tighter and my problem went away, it runs awesome now. Has anyone experienced this or have an idea on a fix. It's been fine but in my head it's like a duct tape and bailing wire fix. Thanks.

I find that some aftermarket carb manifold gaskets are rubbish and don't fit very well, I always use genuine Harley gaskets for this and change them once a year.

I would think the flat rubber ring that goes around the carb maniflold joint would seal it. Did you replace that also?

If it coughs when cold then you have it jetted just right, you could go up on the low speed jet but if no coughing when warm I would leave it.

I agree to a point. My 99 EVO used to cough when cold, and it also ran a little lean at 50 mph in 5th gear. It would kind of hunt, and not hold a throttle setting. I do have drag pipes and a K&N air filter. I changed the pilot jet from a 42 to 45, and it runs much better. The plugs are still a very light tan. I was getting about 52 miles per gallon with the 42 jet. Now I get about 48 to 50 with the 45 jet. I have an 80 in the main jet instead of the 75 that was in it originally. It does not cough anymore as long as I warm it up before I ride. I push in the erichner as soon as I get it started, and keep it running with the throttle lock.

The one that slides onto the manifold and the carb slide in it, yes I replaced that. That is where I have electrical tape on the carb. It coughs when putting in a low gear as well, but only occasionally. I did re-jet it last summer. The previous owner had it jetted all screwy. Runs pretty decent now. I didn't jet it properly by riding at certain throttle openings and checking the plugs, but it's worlds better and I'm not fowling plugs any more.

Cough = too rich

Spit = too lean

If its a CV carby the transitions between jets and needle etc should be seamless.

Only coughs when cold. Runs great when warm. Sometimes riding in temps near or below 50 she'll cough once or twice at speed but that rairly happens.
