Default FXR 107 vs. 117

I'm doing a total rebuild on my fxr and can't decide between doing a axtell 107 motor or 117. Any thoughts, positives, or negatives on the two?

I am not an engine builder, but if its dollar for dollar my old school brain says build the bigger one.

117 needs stronger cases and you likely won't ever use the extra horsepower, the 107 will scare you silly but still be useable....the extra cubes are just *****-waving if you ask me....

I built a 103 for a customer recently, its 101HP and 106TQ and quite fast enough for anyone. The 107 will be more powerful but will you ever find those high HPs while riding? Cam it for monster mid-range torque and it will be a hoot to ride.

I have an S&S 107 with 101HP and 107TQ. Do I ever use the power? No. Do I use the torque? You bet. Could I use even more? Yes please! Is it fast enough? Nope.

I have written on HDF before that it is easy to justify a 131". Given the cash I could quite like squeezing in an S&S 145. Now THAT might be scary.....

As for which Axtell to buy, that is down to personal choice. My motor has an almost flat torque curve, which is why the HP is not very high, but it is very rideable. A 117" with a similar torque curve would be a nice boost and worth having, even if it is shy of the performance of a 131"! I suggest studying the spec of both motors, deciding what it is you really want of your bike and choosing accordingly.
