Default 1987 FLHTC Electra Glide inner fairing options?

I'm not super hip on all the options for inner fairings on these older models, just picked up a 1987 FLHTC for $4,000. But the inner fairing is either missing or never came with one. The volume control switch is on the left, was there a switch on the right side of bars? Since the volume switch is there it leads me to beleive that this had a radio at some point, but the only thing behind the outer fairing is the speedo cluster. Do I have to find one specifically for the 1987 or will others years fit? Any aftermarket fairings? Will the newer style of switch housings (96 and newer I think) wire up to the older wiring and radio controls?

I dont have the direct answer for you as I am new to this. However, a quick google search found this:

With that, I am wondering if 87-96 where all similar? If so, I bet you have some decent options in that range.

After doing some research on it, it looks like all the inner fairings from 84-95 were the same, 96 being the newer style. I founf a couple on Ebay. Anyone got a clue if thats correct? As far as the wiring goes, I think I can handle most of that. Im thinking just start with the newer style handle bar switches, wire those to the stock blinkers, lights, horn, kill, and engine start, then fab a mount to make a newer style Sony radio (with steering wheel controls) work with the 95 and older inner fairing, but also have it plug and play with the newer switch housings on the bars. So parts list would be: pre 1995 inner fairing, 96 and newer hand controls wired to newer style radio and the old OEM basic control wires. Sound about right anyone? Also gonna need most of the mounting stuff to mount iner fairing and gauges to stock inner fairing, any ideas there?

Ya, kinda. But it'll take more time and money to try and find all of the stock parts which are obsolete. The newer style hand controls look piles better IMO. Anyone got any other input? ANy is appreciated.

In 88 they went from 4 gauges to 2. I was to fit the DIN chassis radio.

If you read thru this post: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/evo-c...eed-ideas.html , I fitted a new Sony with handlebar controlls, and the automatic volume using a Biketronics adapter. I now have done this twice since my bike burned the year after I did this. If you can get a COMPLETE handle bar set with wiring and plugs of a '88 - '95 with radio it will speed things up a lot. You will still need schematics for BOTH to find which wires are different. They power up the turnsignals different somewhere in there and I had to sort out wires. I was able to do a little cutting and get the radio to look great in the stock nose weather cover and inner fairing for '87. You will need the complete inner fairing, all the brackets for mounting it and the radio or you might fight keeping the radio solid. There should be some out there where guys have converted them over to "Road Kings" looking where you can score it all. As far as '96 and up switches....probably the same deal, schematics and head scratching. I am no Einstein... if I can do it, a LOT of you can!!.
P.S. Radio shack makes a tool that looks like a metal syring for pushing pins out if connecters, unscrew it, add a washer to get the depth you need for the outer nose (you will bottom on the inner plunger before you release the pin at the base if you don't) and you can pull those ? - '95 wires out of the connectors in seconds!!

I found a couple inner fairings on Ebay that Ill keep an eye on, but i wont have any of the inner brackets. So that will be the first hurdle in getting this going. I also scored a 88-95 left hand switch housing. I decided Id use the 88-95 "square switches" and the biketronics kit. But figured Id have an easy time finding a OEM replacement set of switches for 88-95. Havent found any in the aftermarket yet. ZSo I need to find the brackets for inner fairing and radio and the 88-95 switches. If anyone knows or has these lemme know. Thanks for the replies so far. I build custom bikes from the ground up so wiring is easy. But finding the parts proving to be a challenge. Im new to the "full fairing" crew. LOL

I got the 1989 FLHTC inner fairing so I have the 2 hole gauge fairing that allows the radio to fit a little nicer than the 87 models. And I got 3 mounting brackets from the same seller and same bike off Ebay. The 3 mounting brackets are the two outer brackets that attach to the triple trees, and one "t" shaped large bracket that I assume goes in the center and spreads out to support the ends of the fairing. Are these the only three brackets that physically attach the inner fairing to the bike? Now what other brackets am I going to be searching for as far as radio mount and gauge mount? Currently my gauges are mounted "laying down" on top of the top triple tree. I geuss I was guessing that this speedo/tach bezel would bolt up to the inner fairing by just moving it upright. I prolly wont be doing to entire install until I get the radio and Bike Tronics kit here, but wanna be somewhat planned out for bracketry when I do get them. Thanks guys

Default Fairing

I have coverted early EVO's to the new style fairing, Make sure your OK with wiring as it's a nightmare, The best way to go about it would be to get a complete wiring harness for the 99 model which has all the new style plugs, when looking...buy the complete harness including the inner fairing harness. they are different for carbed and injected. You will also need the inner and outer fairing, brackets, windshield, switch housing w/ switches, a new set of handlebar controls and guages with a cable driven speedo.

If you dicide to go with the orgnial fairing for that year I have an NOS inner and outer fairing, brackets and guages.
