Default primary capacity 1989 softail

hello, been looking for the answer to this but am not finding it. Does anyone know of the primary capacity for a 1989 fxstc. I have drained it and put 1 quart back in although it definitely had more in it than that. thanks again for your help.

My '95 takes about 36 ounces. I fill my primary to just over the outer ring on the diaphram spring. (What you are looking at when you pull off the derby cover).

Everything I have seen on my 88 says 28 ounces. Just make sure as said above the outer ring has fluid on it. Also make sure the bike is upright when you fill it, not leaning. I set two 2x4s under the kickstand.

Smile primary capacity

thanks for the reply. I have heard from 24 to 48 ozs. On my 90fl, in the owners manual it had a sticker over the page[update] that said to fill until level is 2 1/2 inches from the center of the clutch adjuster. Didnt know if that applied to the 89fxst. thanks again!

We're confusind models and years here. Softails take around 38 oz. Earlier FLTs take 28-32 ( shorter primay.) Later FLT take 38 or so because now the primarys are the same size.

Around 38 oz to the bottom of the ring, bike standing up for your Softail.

Fill the primary until the lube just reaches the outer diameter of the diaphragm spring. It will take a few ounces over a quart.

Forget about the service manual on this, the `89 manual was incorrect, it says to fill it up to the opening in the derby cover, which is way too much.

Apples and oranges...89's still have basically a four speed primary. Filling to the diaphragm spring always works. I always just put a quart in mine and call it good....change it every time I change the motor. It is not that critical...all it does is lube the chain and primary bearing...the clutch could care less.

No, 89 does not have basically a 4 speed primary, a 4 speed primary has a dry clutch.

`89 has the 5 speed primary, wet clutch, diaphragm spring, sealed primary case.

The old style primary went away with the end of the dry clutch in mid `84.

Here is an `89 primary, on my ...`89 Softail.....

Bottom line...it doesn`t matter what model or year, just fill to the bottom of the diaphragm spring.

I agree with that. The difference is in the amount of fluid it will take. The Softails have a longer chain and therefore a longer primary, I would think, which is why they take more fluid. Everyone says 32oz, but my manual says 30-36oz. 36 ounces about does it for mine which brings it to the bottom of the clutch pack where the manual says it should be.
