Default Replacement Rear Belt

1985 FXWG

I had a problem where randomly I would feel a "grab" or "pull" at the rear wheel. Almost like something was getting in the way of the spinning tire.

I just noticed that I am missing a couple of teeth on the rear belt, and a few more are barely attached. The loose ones are able to actually roll over into what should be the space between the teeth. I think the teeth rolling over was causing the jerking feeling as it went around the pulley. I guess like it would feel if a rock or something got in the belt.

My question is about replacement belts. What is the best type to go with? Any particular brand? I know Gates are one type.

Time for a new belt. I went through 2, then I stopped doing wheelies and the 3rd has lasted me >20 years.

Gates probably makes all of them. As that is something that really only rarely gets replaced (if you don't do wheelies), I'd stick with OEM.

I'm on my third OEM belt, haven't looked at any others, as the price difference is not that great in my experience. When looking at other brands, take into account shipping costs to see if they are worth buying.

Changing my belt on my FXDXT as we speak; only got 115,000 miles on it.
I'm a little disappointed :-)

The compensator nut is kicking my *** though. Round two coming up.

While you're in there think about replacing the stator. I just put a 32 amp stator in my 85 and the connectors are much bigger and better than my stock 22 amp. I wish I had done that the last time I had the inner primary apart.

Let us know how it goes.

Besides the stator, what else nees to be replaced to do this? regulator? rotor?

while you're in there i'd take a close look at the sprocket shaft seal and spacer..... for short money, they're worth replacing if you even see a hint of a leak

pjb, there's a whole kit from the dealer that isn't too expensive. I'm going to put one on my bike the next time I'm in there. There's been discussion on the board here, so you might search, but if I recall of the top of my head, the 32 amp kit will bolt on without any other changes, where as a 36 (?) amp kit or the next one bigger needs some changing to get it to work on our era bikes. Note that I have not done this yet, take it as "net wisdom" and research it yourself.

Eventually, I'll change my bike to EFI with Megasquirt, and I need the amps to run it.
