I just installed a new barnett clutch in a late 84 flhtc and it chatters and grabs hard when taking off from a stop. The harley manual recommended dry install and barnett recommend soaking for 10 min. to prevent glazing. I chose soaking because its their clutch. road for a week and then replaced clutch releasing plate and all new springs. It doesn't chatter as much but still does. any sugestions. a buddy of mine says to pull up to tree, smoke the hell out of the tire and the clutch will seat and be alright.
Have not a clue but sure want to hear answer. My guess is something is not flat. You buddy may be right but you do not need to smoke tire. Just thumb up the throttle, grab a hand full of brake and let the clutch out very slowly so as it just nicks the high spot of the run out. When you put it together by any chance were the steel plates tight on the clutch hub splines. What does you throw out bearing look like? If you have the early 84 clutch it has a pile of parts. The late motel 84 has the throw out bearing on the transmission side similar to my 04. What did Barnett suggest?

What oil are you using in your primary? how much free play on your clutch handle?
Don't do a clutch burn as a repair. You can break stuff that you can't afford to fix!
hatch.
I use 20-50 but its just enough for the primary chain then it goes back to the tank. the clutch really doesn't get any oil on it so to speak. free play is around 1/16 to an 1/8. the tranny is a fxe 5 speed first year with 80 weight mixed with lucas heavy weight oil stabilizer and no clunking when changing gears now. best remendy
If your running a wet clutch, the primary should have ATF or 10 W 40 or something in it filled up to the lower rim of your derby cover. This also transfers heat from your engines crank case & dissipates it.
First of all ur friend is a moron to tell u to smoke up the tires and clutch. I have a L84 flhtc also, first year for evo and a 5 spd. I have had the exact issues as u with my launching at take off no matter how slow and easy i let the clutch out and the chattering of the clutch when i installed my aftermarket clutch.
The launching/grabbing is from a bad pilot bearning on the other side of the tranny. The heavier springs and harder pull made mine self distruct, and every time i went to take off, the bike grabbed like i just dumped the clutch. So i fixed that and put a new bearing in, she took off nice, but still had the chatter. That my friend would be ur compensator sprocket rocking back and forth on the cam lobes. I took mine off and just run a sprocket with no compensator, chatter is gone, if u choose to go that route be sure to use a gear with the same tooth count. As for primary fluid, i personally use straight 60 weight, but i also use my bike as a primary mode of transportation, 25k or more a year. Thicker oil eases the clutch plates toghether a lot smoother when u shift. and doesnt sling off as easy as thinner oil. Just my experiance.
