Default Clutch Set Screw Issue

I adjusted my clutch a few weeks ago and things seemed to be ok. A couple of nights ago I was riding and it started acting up, almost had no clutch with hard shifting and major tug at stop signs. Stopped and did a quick cable adjustment and was able to get most of it back, but I noticed that the adjusting "tube" was no longer attatched to the bottom half of the sheath, it would slide free from the sheath but not come totally into 2 pieces. Tried to limp her home and sure enough about half way there the clutch was totally gone, I assumed my cable had broke and I just got her home in second. Anyway I picked up a new cable, got it installed and when I took off the derby cover to do the adjustment found my set screw was totally losoe. My service manual didn;t say anything about touching the set screw until you adjusted after installing the new cable, so I don't know if it was loose before I started.

My question(s) to the forum:
Did I not get the locking nut tight when I did the adjustment and that was the issue?

When I did the cable only adjustment as a quick fix could I have somehow loosened the set screw?

When you remove the tranny cover to install the new cable could that have loosened the set screw?

no i think the loose clutch set screw is a separate issue. id adjust the clutch and then make sure the locknut is tight. then adj.the clutch cable and see how it goes.

Thanks, that's what I've done. Unfortunately I didn;t get it done until about midnight and couldn;t ride to work today, so it may be tomorrow before I can take it out for a long run to see if it holds up.

Hopefully the nut didn't come loose and fall down into the primary cover. I wouldn't fire it up again until your sure that's not what happened, if it did your going to need to pull the entire primary cover off to see what damage was done by that nut flopping around in there....damn I hope that's not what happened!

No, the nut did fall down and it seemed to tighten quite well. Thanks for the concern.
