Got the primary apart today, didnt have the 1 1/2 socket for the comp nut, so I had to go down the hill to get one. Got the tank off and the rest of the dash shell off too. So far so good.
My primary chain seems to be streched pretty good.....what is the "I need to replace it" point? When I run out of adjustment? There is still adjustment left, but not to much.
The way I understand it the way to tell if the primary chain needs to be replaced is by stretching it out and picking it up by one end. If it stays straight it is fine and if it points to the floor it is time to replace it.

When I had my S&S 107 installed, the mech pointed out the tips of the compensator teeth were starting to get sharp. He checked over the clutch sprocket teeth which were fine, as he expected, so on his suggestion we replaced compensator and chain. Hope that helps!
Progressing nicely........primary is off and clean, seals are on hand, new stator is installed. All in all, its been a good day! I also found that starting fluid melts grease better than alot of de-greasers.
Tomorrow the new seals go in and the inner primary goes back on. I'm waiting on the starter jackshaft rebuild kit, sposed to be in tomorrow, if it gets here I may be able to button up the primary.
Actually brake cleaner works great for breaking down grease and gasket surface leftovers. I'm glad you mentioned jackshaft, I was up at the parts dealer
3 times this week and forgot to get one of
those end tab washers.
The primary is back together, after removing the inerds 3 times, LOL. I seemed to have a brain fart about how the starter jackshaft went together, but got it in the end.
The front end is completely apart, down to the triple trees, need to rebuild the forks. I dont have a long shank 1/4" allen that wll go on the impact to pop the damper rodhold down screws off, so I will pick one up tomorrow. May have to replace one of the fork tubes, there's a little scaring on one, but I ran out of light and motivation for today.
Well I'm at a standstill for now. Got one leg apart, but the other damper bolt was already stripped, so I had to drill it out to get it apart. After that fiasco I inspected the 23 year old fork tubes and.......there done! Aftermarket tubes are $200+ for the pair, HD still makes them for $70 each. I'll have them from HD next week. Have some little things that I can do for now, like redo the venting system and remove the canister and start to do the battery relocation to under the seat.
Got the new fork tubes today and they are back on the bike now. With Revtech springs and emulators installed. Will most likely get the front tire, brakes, handlebars, and dash back on tomorrow.
