Default Wrench-fest 2011!

Is about ready to begin! I have collected a plethora of parts for the EGS. If you remember it started with a charging issue, so I have a new HD stator and voltage reglator. New primary gasket along with the engine inner primary o-ring and the seals for behind the clutch, since it leaks oil behind the primary just about everywhere.

Yesterday I picked up the upper/lower bushings, rebuild/seal kit, RevTek spring kit with emulators, the hardware to eliminate the air dampening system, and chrome cowbells to match the chrome legs that are on the bike. I have also picked up the right crashbar for the front, fender bumpers, and a stock twinkie exhaust with heatshields.

I also have been Ebay shopping. I dont know if I mentioned that some IDIOT decided to weld the saddlebag support bars to the fender braces, I guess that was easier than using a nut and bolt. So I picked up a set of late model ones (96) to repair/replace the ones that were on there. Sometime in the future I will go to late model bags and go with a Sportster battery under the seat. Sunday I will go to the LB swapmeet for some handlebars that are more comfy and any cables and hoses that are needed.

So Monday will be the start of Wrench-Fest 2011, maybe riding next weekend.

I noticed that you picked up a set of late model saddlebags. You may already know this but the spring in the latch tend to break over the years. Parts books do not show a part number for the spring. For that matter, some Harley dealers don't know about the spring part-number.

90707-00 is much cheaper than a new latch! I know they fit the '98 models......

Don't forget the seal for the starter shaft and check the pulley nut to make sure it's tight too(left hand thread). You may even want to replace the tranny seal if it hasn't been replaced as the newer ones had a couple of improvements over the old ones. Hope this helps.

I was going to replace the crankcase and tranny seal, but the guy at the parts counter said that I needed special tools to do them and that they hardly ever are the leakers. As for the starter, I have all the seals but the trans and crankcase.

No late bags yet, just the stuff to be able to change over to them. Kinda broke now, but saving pennies.

You weren't kidding when you said it was a work in progress.
As for tranny seal you just need to get a if I remember right 1-7/8 6 Point socket and cut it in half and add the length of the Mainshaft from pulley out and weld the 3 pieces back together. For the engine crank seal I never really heard of it needing replacing. I'm sure you have the manual so be sure to follow the reassembly of inner to engine and tranny or you'll twist the inner and guaranteed have a leak.

Thanks for the info, I'm hopin that it will go semi-smooth. I could have just done quick fixes through the summer, but the more I took it apart, the nore I saw that I should just fix it right the first time and be done with it. Hopefully I wont have to take it apart again for awhile.

Back from the swapmeet, found some handlebars, 15" apes for $15.....I'll try them and see if I like them. They seem pretty comfy from what I can tell. I also picked up a swingarm, axle, and rear caliper form a 2004 Ultra for $80.

Kowboy - I'll be following Wrench-Fest 2011 with interest! Bertha is our 95 FLHTP... the very LAST year of the FLHS style, but came only in Police trim after 1993. So FLHS bikes are special to me.

I'm not a pro wrench like John and others - so I don't have any words of wisdom. That swing arm you bought has a bigger axle through the tranny. Graham has mounted new swingarm like that to his 1990 FLHS... Hopefully he'll chime in here.

Good luck with Wrench-Fest!!!

I'm a pretty good wrench, but am new to EVO's. So I will learn as I go, didnt get any time this week to do anything though. They make an adaptor kit for the late model swingarm upgrade to retrofit one into the early frame and I'm saving my pennies for that and a set of wheels. The weather this week is sposed to be crap, so I should have some time to work on the Ol'girl this week.
