Good luck with Wrench-Fest!!!
I doff my hat to Mountainkowboy! Most of my messing about with bikes is simple stuff, but getting into the primary is something I leave to braver souls than me!

'Tis true the 04 swingarm bearings take a larger axle than our Evos. Simplest way around that is to use after-market bushings in the new swingarm that take the old diameter axle. They are available from at least three sources, including Motorcycle Metal, True-Track and Sta-Bo. A cheaper way may be to make and install sleeves in the stock 04 bushings.

It's all covered in my Suspension THUMP! thread.

There is nothing sinister in the primary, its heavy work but actually one of the simplest parts of the bike to work on.....just make sure you got a Delrin block to jam it all up with and a scaffold pole to undo that crankshaft nut and all is well.

I can replace a drive belt in 2.5 hrs now :-)

Got some nice wood blocks for jamming and an old floor jack pole for the breaker bar.

We have these guys that come around to the local motels selling tools. I picked up a 3/4" drive air impact wrench for $49.00. We figured "what the hell if it don't work we aren't out as much as a Snap-on wrench". Well it works great, two or three hits and it's loose. So check out these guys.

The crankcase seal comes out really easy if you already have the primary off and goes in without special tools. Drill a hole on either side of the seal being careful not to nick anything or drill deeper than the seal itself. (There is room behind the seal, so just don't go too deep.) Run a sheet metal screw in either side and pull the seal out. I use a slide hammer but usually they'll come out by just grabbing the screws with a pair of pliers.

Well.....I had a small delay in the starting of the EGS.......winter never came, so I've been doing other stuff around the ranch since there has been good weather. I missed out on ALOT of riding though and am tired of not having a bike to ride. Of course shortly after I get it on the road, I know winter will hit and I will have to wait till May to ride again......LOL!

Will be cleaning up the garage this week and starting the build.

Got the garage cleaned and done today, will pull the primary apart tomorrow and pull the tank off. My riding buddy who has been battling cancer for awhile rode over today and is chompin at the bit for me to get the EG out on the road. First time he's rode the Ultra in a year and a half.

Sounds exciting, the old girl could be out on the road real soon. I've got mine partially apart although nothing serious, I replaced the rockers and got a new chrome cone, rocker covers and primary cover. I'm also wiring in the pigtail for hooking up the dyna2ki for programming. Just been having a hard time getting out to the shop and can't ride for a couple months anyway.
Keep us upto date on your progress.

Got the primary apart today, didnt have the 1 1/2 socket for the comp nut, so I had to go down the hill to get one. Got the tank off and the rest of the dash shell off too. So far so good.

My primary chain seems to be streched pretty good.....what is the "I need to replace it" point? When I run out of adjustment? There is still adjustment left, but not to much.
