Default No Baffles

Thought I'd ask this in the EVO forum, I realized my wife's 99 Sporty 883 all stock except for pipes which are Vance and Hines. So I always thought her bike was just plain loud because of type of pipes then the other day I shovEd a broom handle up the pipes and sure enough no baffles. Now just yesterday while I tried her bike out on the hiway for an hour I noticed it seems a bit under powered when hitting the throttle at 60mph although I had no problem getting it up to 80, I also notice sometimes when she cuts the engine it will run on as well as I noticed on my ride it has a ping more at hi speeds on the throttle. Would these symptoms be associated to the pipes having no baffles. Also if I put some baffles in would it smooth out her rigid mounted bike ?

My guess it is a little lean with open pipes. It should help to put in some baffles, or increase the size of the jets. And yes, it should smooth it out some plus have a little more pep.

First off it probably wont take any vibration out of the bike as it is a rigid mount sporty. The baffles will help the lean condition. If it's carbed then get the 1988 sporty needle and put that in. Do not change the jets, drill the slide or change the spring. A basically stock engine does noy need any of that. Near the ends of your pipes there should be a hole drilled to hold the baffle in place. If you don't want to buy baffles you can take a !/4" X 1 1/2" bolt and a stack of 1/4" flat washers (plain, not lock or fender) about 1" high and put them on the bolt wit a nut on top. This should give you enough back pressure to help.
Check your idle speed, if it is too high the engine may tend to "run on" after you shut it off, especially if it is hot. Hope this helps, let us know how you make out

The washer trick works pretty well. Thumb screws will work too.
