Just wondering if I will need to remove the gas tank to be able to put in new spark plug wires???? I realize there is a couple of clips for the wires under the tank and I'm hoping to be able to push them in with a screwdriver without having to remove the tank. Any input or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I am not for sure about the carburetor models.....

But for the EFI models....it is pain to replace the wires without removing the tank. I replaced mine without removing the tank....and it sucked. The hardest part was to fully seat the wire to the coil. It would probably been easier and maybe quicker if I just removed the tank.

Too bad they weren't designed like the Dyna or FXR's.......5 minutes tops to replace wires.

Thanks EVO rider. Unfortunately I think the tanks is gonna have to come off. I hear you with the older models being so much easier to install. I have a 87 Sporty as well and it took me all of 5 mins to install plug wires.

Not just the tank ... on mine you start with removing the seat to uncover tank's rear bolts.

To make it easier do it with an almost empty tank.

Be sure to cover tank with a protective cover, even a towel to avoid any "oops" that might damage the finish.

I would also look at replacing the petcock screen while I had the tank off. Maybe even flush the tank to remove anything that might be in there.

Johhnny, Gump all good advice. I'm definitely going to change petcock screen and blow out gas lines and flush out tank. I live in Toronto Canada so my riding days are coming to an end so I have time to do what you all have advised. Cheers and thanks!!
