Default 95 custom died

Did a search and found some info, but not exactly.

Took her out for about a half an hour and she died right in the middle of the road. I had to charge her for a bit to get her to run (bout 10v prior), but once started she was running. I was close to the house when she started to stumble and cut out. went to hit the start button and nothing. puched her 6 blocks to the house and put her on the charger again (about 10v again). and now she'll turn over about 2-3v times and click. Sounds like its struggling to overcome compression. Any thoughts? Thanks.

First thing to do is get a battery that you know is good before anything else. Install it, try it, and then move to the next step if needed.

So I just got back from Home Depot (got a leak in the roof) and she started right up. voltage is 11.42 running slightly higher than idle, and 11.2 not running.

You think Im looking at a battery or the charging system? Thanks.

How much searching did you do? We keep suggesting a sticky, but we never get one.

You are not charging, you need to check stator output and if that Ok assume the rectifier is duff......open your derby cover or primary adjuster and take a good sniff....if it stinks of burning then is likely your stator.

Ill test as described in the link y'all listed. I did everything except check the bike revved up the 2500 rpm, seemed fine.

How long do you think a bike would run on a fully chafed battery alone? I thought if the stator was bad, shed die shortly after disconnecting the charger. Voltage was strong (12.4) today at idle.

You need a shovel but a battery may help, Charge it and carry it (battery) to AutoZone for a free check

I suspect a well placed reference to a kicker , I won't have a bike without one .

Take the meter get the bike started at an idle the meter should read a bit over whatever the battery level was , rev the engine up a few times the meter should increase with rpm up to 13 to 13.8 volts if it doesn't battery isn't the problem the regulator of the stator is out .
Pull the stator plug on the case set the meter to AC voltage start the bike , careful to not touch the cases test the two leads coming out of the case they will be 2 holes or studs can't recall your year off the top , you should be showing voltage up to 40 plus volts when revved a bit . It does the reg's bad it doesn't the stators cooked .

All this is in the MANUAL you should have . Do even with the battery tests ok
