I have a 99 fatboy with the stock 1340 evo in it. I have vance and hines longshot pipes. Arlen ness big sucker, andrews ev27 cam and cv performance kit in the stock carb. I was going to do some upgrading but was wondering if a performance ignition was a worthy investment and if so which one to buy. Also what a bout a carb upgrade or stick with the stock one?
I re[laced the stock ignition module on my '93 ultra, with Harleys SE module. The only difference I could see was it increased the point where the rev limiter kicked in.,,
I got the dyna 2000i digital programable ignition on single fire. Crane cams single fire coil, accel wires and plugs. Only thing i really noticed was the motor responded a bit snappier then with stock ignition, easier starting when cold and longer plug life, less fouling. Oh and a higher rev limit. I think stock units rev to 4500-5000 rpms? I can run it to 7k
Let's be clear about what an ign system upgrade can do.....the main thing is an increased rev limit, stock is 5300rpm, a Sporty module gives 6200rpm, as does the SE. The only other thing an ign upgrade can provide is a superior advance curve (or curves)...the advance curve upgrade is really only there for when you are adding properly hot cams etc and want to get the most from your upgrade as the advance can then be altered to get the best bang for your buck.
On a stage 1 bike the effect is there but it ain't huge, on a stock bike the advance curves will not make a great deal of difference but can make the bike seem smoother and a bit snappier.
For the money these things cost there is almost always a better way of getting more power in the early stages.
My advice to those I tune Hogs for is to do everything else first and the ign last as the other things will give the customer (or you) what you are looking for...a heap of extra urge for your hard-earned.
You can do lot of things to a Harley and never upgrade the ign, it will still go fast and make you smile. If all you need is more rpm at the limiter to unleash as much of that new HP as you can, go for a Sporty Module, they are dead cheap 2nd hand and will do all you need it to do.
Leads make no difference, its been proved but fat leads look cool, there is no denying that :-)
I certainly noticed the differnce when I went to the dyna programable and when the the single fire coil went and I had to go back to the dual fire coil I noticed a large differnce from the single fire, once I got the new single fire crane coil my bike was very happy.
Keep in mind the reason I changed my ignition in the first place was because the original ignition was 22 years old and although it was doing its job other than rev limiter kicking out on the big hills/hi speed I just felt better knowing I had a new upto date ignition.
