Default dino oil or synthetic in a 91 ultra

Ok so I am picking up a 91 ultra in a week or so.The owner acquired the bike through a death in the family and is not sure of the records. the bike is extremely clean so i am sure it has been cared for properly.
I will change all the fuilds when I get it home just for my knowledge and peace of mind.
My question is should I go synthetic or not?
I am thinking I will stay with dino 20w 50
in the engine and the standard in the tranny and primary
my thinking is with the bike being 20 years old the gaskets
will not stand the new syn oil.
I ran rotella syn in my ktm's but they are a 01 400 and the 950 adv
what is the cosenses here my friends?

I'd stick with dino. There's no advantage to synthetic in a older motor other than lightening your wallet and helping you find leaks faster.

Your bike is 20 years old and almost predates synthetic oil! Stay with dyno oil for the engine.

blackbear, my local Harley dealer here in the UK has that name!

Now, I've heard that once you go syn, don't got back to dino. Bought my 90 fxr and went to syn with no problems so far. Keep my fingers crossed. I really have not read a difinitive answer to this question. Would really get off on someone coming up with the dog down deal on this question that comes up all the time.

Who tells you this stuff. Mobil states on their website as does amsoil and red line that you can use either in an engine. And how would synthetic blends exist if you have to use one or the other. It us amazing the bullshit info you read on the net

Again. Wrong. Synthetic lasts longer, can withstand higher temps which is especially great for an air cooled motor and also drops engine temps up to 20 degrees. Op. Use what you want. It's not going to blow up no matter what you use but what I have read in this thread makes me laugh. Synth will extend drain intervals around twice as long.

Tried synthetic in the fxr once. It wanted to find its way out so I took it out. I didnt like the "wet" look at a lot of the case seams.

Default synthetic or not.?

Here is my opinion:
Im a newby Harley owner but was a " tech. guru " on the main GoldWing site for a couple of years .
Synthetic oil is sold as the " best " because it dosent break down during use as other oils will . The oil change intervals with syn. oil are approx. double that of non. syn. oils. The syn. oil is excellent but it does get dirty and filtering the oil is the next problem .
Most syn. oils must be used with a syn. oil filter that is built to specs. to withstand the longer oil change intervals provided by the extended syn. oil life . This fact is usually not noticed by users of syn. oil and they run the oil to twice the regular change interval with a standard filter that has gone to 25-50% of its capacity to clean .
With motorcycles , its a question of wet clutches and this what to look for ...
Synthetic oil is a superb product compared to standard oil., just be sure you select the proper type. Any can with a type descibed as including a " friction modifier " is not to be used in a wet clutch as clutch slipping could occur.
Besides that ., you can use this excellent oil with a standard oil filter as long as you change the oil as per usual motorcycle seasonal oil change intervals.
If you want to run it through 2 years , change the filter only.
Also ., any syn. gear oil is better than any stock and will quiet the box and help with shifting ect.
Your choice Bro.
