Question Oil pressure but no circulation.

Greetings all,

My 89 FXR has me a bit confused and was hoping for some input..
OK, project bike that was sitting for about 4 years...
I drained all fluids, cleaned carb, new rotor and sensor plate, ignition module, voes, coil, plugs, battery..yada, yada, yada..
Now, I thoroughly flushed the oil bag and replaced all oil lines, replaced check ball and spring, tappet filter, and primed the oil pump.
At cold start my oil pressure is 35-40 (taking pressure from tappet block), as she warms up pressure drops to about 10 psi @ 1100 rpm and would increase upon acceleration...I was kinda happy to see that but it didn't take long for the valve noise to start...I checked my oil level ( she did sump on me when started), oil level was ok, and noticed that my oil temp was only 90 degrees and I could see no evidence of oil returning to the bag...So I shut her down...Uh, yea, I did stick my finger in the bag..The gauge might be off a degree or two but the oil was way to cool considering it was running at operating temp.
I triple checked that my lines were run correctly.
How would it be possible for my pressure to be what it is yet have nearly no circulation?
Any thoughts you might have would be appreciated.
D

Return could be blocked in the tank, the sump or at the pump but if its not returning it should wet sump and sploodge all over the place....and the oil level should keep going down...

I agree, but I have no sumping after the initial sump (one time the first time I started it) and no decrease in oil level and a modest increase in oil temp at the tank...yet good pressure. I am going to pull all lines today and check for potential obstructions in lines and tank.
I have the service manual and the oil line routing diagram is not clear on which of the two connections at the tank are the return line and which is the vent line..Looking inside the tank it appears that both the return and vent lines are just 'stand pipes' that dump into the top of the tank.I don't see how reversing the two at the tank would matter..maybe I am wrong.
I appreciate the input and will keep ya posted..

Think this thru.

You have good pressure, the oil level is not dropping, and its not sumping, but you have vavle train noise.

Check the lifters.

True, also, they can take about 5 miles to stop rattling if they were totally depressurised. When I do Sporties and don't wanna take the rocker carrier assembly out I drain the lifters and remove the shafts to get the rockers out....takes a good run before they stop clacking.

I will definetely check that..Do you also think that a lifter issue would explain the return oil situation?

What kind of oil pressure are you getting? Harleys run on low pressure and high volume, your manual should tell you what to expect. A blockage would give you higher oil pressure. Kinda like when you dial down the garden hose.

A blockage will not affect pressure, if an oil passageway is blocked, the pressure will still be controlled by the oil pressure relief valve in the oil pump.

noticed that my oil temp was only 90 degrees and I could see no evidence of oil returning to the bag...
A blockage in the scavenge line could definitely be causing this, but it could also be that the oil pump scavenge gears are not turning, possibly a sheared key.
