i know the tranny is different, and the engine on the early models breathes threw the crank case and the newer models breathes at the heads, but what im trying to find out is what fits what?
id like to run an open belt primary and 6 speed on my 87, but i cant seem to find any shops that can tell me if a 90-99 primary and trans will bolt right in to my 87 frame and cases. anybody here have any input?
The inner primary was the same bolt pattern to the transmission from 1985 to 1993. The starter changed in the 1990 model year, causing the change in the inner primary, and again in 1994. The transmission/oil pan didn't change until the 1993 model year. The 1993 year was a "One Year Primary because of the change of the new transmission bolt pattern, but old starter. Starting with the 1994 to 2000 the Inner Primary was the same. Starting with the 2001 the bolt pattern changed again.
If you wanna do a 6 speed with an overdrive, make sure you have the nuts to use it- on a near-stock motor you'll only be able to use on level ground and have to downshift to pass, or pull up a hill.
you can make slight final gearing changes with pulleys, which can be inexpensive and practical. You have the 70T rear pulley, a 65 T ( p/n 40515-94) would give slight overdrive and may use your present belt, you'd need about 5/8" play in the adjusters from where you are now- the belt guard might need adjusting too.
I run a 60T on my FXR and a 65T on my evo bagger. I have another 65T in the garage.

Ah the bastard year Softails...85 was a 4 speed to at least midyear and was all shovelhead stuff. 86-88 was weird setup that had a 5 speed with some sort of morphodite primary that used a 4 speed starter. Don't believe it is a direct bolt-up, but not hard to make work. Rivera-primo sells a conversion kit with all the parts needed to run a belt drive/ 6 speed on an 86-88. My weak 75 hp EVO pulls a 6 speed just fine...don't listen to the people that say you need a 100hp motor for a 6 speed...BS
im running 14:1 compression im sure i can run a 6 speed just fine. i just found the open belt and 6 speed kit from jireh are 1000 bucks with free shipping, if itll bolt on how can you go wrong.
i used to build bikes in california, but unfortionatly we has this old man "pan head ed" that was the guru and knew if all this stuff fit and he croaked about the time i quit.
