while riding my 1987 heritage she just quits. Changed the ignition switch because loose and checked wires ran fine for awhile now doing it again.need a little help...thanks
Does everything quit or just the engine shutting off? Lights still on? Have you checked your battery connections, tighten with a 10mm not a screwdriver . I know this sounds basic , but you gotta start somewhere
the lights stay on checked all connections and wires, battery good.Just got in from the rain riding with a bud and she died 4 times again.we were trying to make her die and not start so we could eliminate things. Each time she would fire back up and away i go. got it to another buds and took the dash, seat and batt off and looked again for anything that looked not right..mabe the module or in the cone?? thanks for ur input
Check your coil and all wiring to/from it. Is it doing it all the time or just when it rains? (noticed your post about the rain). Spray some WD-40 on your connections and make sure they are plugged tight and not corroded. Make sure your derby cover is sealed too. Put some silicone or dielectric grease on your plug in connections too, to ward off moisture and corrosion.
Yes did check the coil and the wiring, this just started yesterday and thought the ignition switch was the culprit or hoping it was.due to it being quite loose and being the original switch from 87 .The girl only has 36000 km which is 23000 miles i believe.Wasn't raining yesterday or when we first started riding and died..
Mate intermittent is usually a connection, unless it only does it hot ,that's usually a system failing. That'll b ignition somewhere usually the pick up in the nose cone,reg/rec sometimes.
Complete stop is usually a failure.
The multi meter can find it,can u drive the multi meter is the Q.
Voltage irregularities battery or looms shorting, or the stator, but again it's the multi meter area.
You'll find it.
All the above cover just about all that could be wrong. You might want to install new circuit breakers as they do wear out and can be a bear to diagnose until they get real bad, plus the cost is minimal. It's probably not the main as the lights stay on, but what the heck change it anyway as it won't hurt and may save you from having problems with that one a little down the road. Hope this helps
My old sporty would die when it got hot. Esp. at a light, cool off some and it would fire up fine. Checked every thing and was stumped. Then one day I cranked her up and heard a pop, and she died. Walked around it and my coil was cracked and goo was running out of it. Don't know what caused it, I replaced the coil and she ran good since.
