As has been stated, reuse the o-ring, mark the "up"position of the derby cover on the inside, no sealant needed, and use the proper torque on the screws...I bought a new O-ring a few years ago just because mine was old, it's still in the bag...

Well, I got the primary, derby cover and inspection cover all polished up and put it all back together with the o-ring (seated properly) AND new gasket. That is probably where it had been leaking (no gasket in there when I took it apart). We'll see what happens tomorrow. Good thing I was in there 'cause the primary chain needed to be adjusted too. Supposed to be in the mid 70's and I'll take it for a short spin and check to see any evidence of leakage. Thanks again everyone, great help.

Default Derby Cover

My brother's just bought his firs vrod bike and it is leaking some type of fluid from the derby cover on the left side of the bike. What is the fluid? How does he fix it. Does he need a new o-ring? What does the derby cover do anyhow?

Thanks.

RTV = Silcone gasket goo and it is the work of Satan.....never, ever, ever, use it on a Harley except for the crankcases and then only use the correct one. Everything else you should use Hylomar or nothing at all......heretics!!! They'll be asking what oil to use next.....

If you can find someone on here who gives a damn about V-Rods you might get an answer....

The Derby Cover covers the clutch adjustment....

I use both on mine, the gasket or O-ring alone seems to seep a little. Used together I have never had a leak or seep issue.

I thought the if you mentioned V-Rod as a primary topic in a post in this forum it automatically got deleted.

Well, it's been almost two months since I first asked this question and I figured I'd report what I did and how it turned out. Reused the o-ring and put in a new gasket only. No RTV! In most cases I've seen, RTV is an attempt to use a bandaid. Anyway, no leaks, drips or runs with what originally came on it.Thanks again for everyone's help.

Damn, Mine only has an o-ring, and has never leaked a drop unless I happen to pinch the o-ring putting on the cover. Why in the name of *** would you use BOTH a gasket and an o-ring? What am I missing here?
