Starter
Dan I owe you an apology.
I changed out a battery last year that was doing something like that,
It would reset the radio it pulled down so far when I started it.
It would kick in hard then drag on the first revolution or stop turning and have to release and hit the starter again.
The battery never went dead, I still use it around the shop to test lights and stuff.

I have had the same problem wth my 89FLT! On vacation in the Smokies & starter went out. Replaced the starter relay, but it didn't help. We ended up drilling a hole in the solenoid cover. Every time I needed to start the bike I just inserted a drift in the solenoid & pushed it in to start it.
Six days later we got back to florida with no problem!
I had the starter & solenoid rebuilt & six monthe later I had the same problem. So I bought a new starter from Surdyke & the problem went away for a short time & then it came back.
There is 2 ways you can fix your problem.
#1 Install a manual activated switch in the end of solenoid housing.
Starting from $100 from J&P Cycles.
#2 I fixed my problem by installing a ford starter solenoid under the seat.
This is a cheap fix & I haven't had anymore problems. This gets a true 12 volts to the starter.
#1 mount ford solenoid under the seat.
#2 battery cables need to be rerouted to solenoid & then to starter motor.
#3 The power wire from the relay to starter needs to be cut & hooked up to top of the ford solenoid. This is your handle bar button wire.
#4 The hot wire from your circuit breaker to starter need to be cut & hooked up to the "IN" side of the ford solenoid.
#5 Now take the other end of the wire in #3, put a large terminal connector on it & hook it up to the solenoid & then to the starter motor. This will be a short wire when you are done.
That's it your done! This fixed my problem & this has been about 2 years since I did this install.
Just a note. After doing this install you can no longer use a drift to activate the solenoid.
I hope this helps & good luck.
