Default Dimming etc.

If you dont have a manual , buy one now .
See the elec. system and look for the ground points.
Clean and check each.
Check for frayed/shorted wires at the tripple tree location . " where the forks turn back and forth ".
Clean and check all connectors you can find.

Dude... did you actually just drop a "RTFM" on me in the EVO forum? Where did you wander in from? sheesh...

I have a manual and have gone through the schematics a few times. However the manual doesn't state the location of the ground points. Do you happen to know the location of the ground block on a 90 Tour Glide? I could really use that information.

I've checked the wires at the forks and found nothing frayed or shorted, but thank you for the suggestion. Do you have any helpful advice or wisdom?

If it's not the ground, then it's the feed. The orange wire that loops around the bike twice, going through a dozen connections. Put a volt meter on each point and work back to the battery. Possible problem locations: The breakers (including the 30 amp under the seat,) the start relay, the many connections of the orange wire like the super cheap looking connector coming off the ignition switch, the ignition switch itself (NLA / unobtainium), the connectors on the breakers, etc. My theory is that each connections contributes to the problem. It is somewhat normal for the volt meter to jump with the flashers or brake. Also remember that the brake circuit runs the anti dive valve, which takes some juice too.

Sorry D1gger , im a newbie to the Harley website .
Formally a tech. " guru " with the Goldwing site .
Yes, as you say it looks like each elec. component might be grounded individually or at a ground buss not stated in the manuals.
Looks like a ground hunt to find the culprit.
Black wire is ground for illumination .? Check or reground .?
Cheers.

On my 87, all the grounds in the fairing go back to a block at the top of the clutch side fork.

Also, my voltmeter will jump when brake lights come on or when turn signals are in use. I actually find this a bit useful as I know my brake light is functioning. I would consider that normal behavior.

You may consider replacing your flasher. They are cheap, and when I replaced mine, my turn signals and hazzards now flash at a faster more acceptable rate. Before replacement, my turn signals would blink slow and occassionaly would stop flashing when sitting at an idle with all the other electrics running. The flashers wear out over time.

Did you happen to get it fixed? I have a very similar problem and got a higher volt reading when I replaced all the connections on my ground terminal block bit it did not take care of the problem. My gauges actually will drop out or go dead along with the gauge lights. Usually only happens when I turn on my turn signals. Going to replace all my breakers as a next step. Upgraded my flashers and that made them flash brighter and better but still screwed up. Post if you got yours fixed and if so what you did if you can please!
