i have been chasing a rapping in my 91 evo since i rebuilt the engine last year with headwork, ev27, SE pistons and rings, and a few other things
i swapped out cam, ground down webbing in rocker covers, re-adjusted pushrods a dozen times, honed out and cut back push-rod tubes, checked piston to valve clearance, and a few other things
....nothing has stopped it
BUT, what has eventually happened is that it has gotten less frequent... and now, i just ignore it....power and oil is all there, so i live with it
i figure that if something DOES go wrong, i'll find out then... and know enough about this engine that i could fix it myself.... barring something truly catastrophic
Well the more I ride her, the less apparent the noise is. I guess I'm getting used to it, along with the added confidence in my work i have put into my ride.
Did you check the cam gear size compared to the pinion gear before installing the cam?
You may be hearing the sound of excessive gear lash.
How many miles are on the lifters?
Did you replace the inner cam bearing?
How many miles are on the outer cam bushing?
Don`t accept the old wives tale about the EV27 being noisy, that is just an excuse to not solve the problem, there is more involved in a cam change than simply swapping out cams.
I have an EV 27 in my Evo, it is very quiet.
Listen to what Dan is saying about gear lash. I went through this not with changing the cam but changing to a chrome cam cover which is basicly the same thing as the bushings in the cover were line reemed with a case that wasn't mine. I was getting a whine rather than a what your getting. I fixed my problem by buying a new oem chrome cover.
You only need to take one wrist pin out and push the piston pin out from the opposite end, Make sure you use a marker to mark the pins for front and rear and direction they came out so they can go back in same way. You may find you need a cut down allen key for the very rear rocker covers as there's minimal clearnce. I think its 3/16 allen but you can confirm that with the front allen bolts.
