89 will have tapered shaft and 90 will have splined shaft, mine was changed to splined. You don't need to change basket, you only need to change ring gear. The teeth from jacks haft contact ring gear.

That and fat wires wouldn't hurt.

i have been reading about starter kickback on high compression engines, i think the goal this weekend is to pull the starter and see if the engine has busted it to where it doesnt lock backwards, (also run a compression test to void out that problem and check for spark, hit the basics real quick), any good high torque starter ideas?

I am not sure about the ring gear diameter but it may be that you have a missing bush and that is all it is. You might already have a decent enough starter motor for your compression.....don't get distracted by speculation....fix the obvious problem first (it may well work with the chipped teeth if the slop is resolved) and potentially save a heap of dollars....get jiggy with things in the winter mate....you got the rest of the summer to ride and make maintenance plans :-)

To lower the gear ratio in order to make it easier for the starter to turn the motor.....like its in 1st gear rather than 2nd would be the best way to look at it.
