have a 1984 early EVO, i have to replace the oil pump.... and tricks or info on how to do it? i am going to look in the book but thought i woould ask here as well...
Rebuild it according to the manual and no one gets hurt. Prime it before starting the bike and also crank the motor over with no plugs until the oil light goes out before starting it.
Getting the seals to go in straight and level can be an art in itself.
If the body isn't to badly scored then rebuild is the way to go. However if there is a lot of scoring then a new one is needed. Plus you need to figure out where the junk is coming from that is doing it or you will be re-doing it again along with whatever part that is failing. Hope this helps.

well, i guess i will try the rebuild... now how makes a good rebuild kit? here is what is happing... the oil is coming out of the breather in a fast flow... so i dont think the oil is going back to the tank. check ball is ok.

If oil pres. was ok before this problem , your oil pump is probaby ok., oil pump hard failures are very very seldom .
Check all other possibilities before assuming the oil pump is the culprit.
I would suggest you ask your local HD Dealer mech. or service guy for advise before you start tearing into it .
Check for blocked oil lines ,oil tank sludge, deteriorated timed crank breather
gear screen , blocked up tappet oil screen , impacted/blocked oil filter etc.
i just put in a differnt oil filter(harley) the leak got better but still flows out of breather.... i will try to reseat the ball. one thing the oil that is comming out of the breather smells like gas... but could just be me...
If it smells like gas, what it probably is, is reversion. Could be your valves need to be adjusted if you have adjustables, or the intakes may be leaking and the top end needs to be freshened up. Hope this helps.
