I'm looking to either replace the "guts" in my tranny to a 6 speed, or buy a new one. Any recommendations: Pros vs. Cons and recommended Brands and dealers. Thanks all!!!
The stock HD gets a bad rap, but it's a good tranny. Of course, there's always the very, very good Baker, who also makes a 7 speed...
I agree, but can't afford the Baker. Might just replace the shifter dogs (if worn) as I have a hard time going from 2nd to 3rd @ high rpm's and "clunks" pretty loud in most gears (more than others).
I haven't pulled the top to check specs. yet, just looking for ideas. I know Baker makes a 6 speed kit that fits my 5 speed, but it's the same price as a new tranny.
I plan on changing mine to a Baker at some time in the future.
I'm like you I don't have the $ for it now but it is supposed to be top of the line stuff.
Gotta like the Ultima price but went with a Baker OD6 gearset, silent, shifts so easy you think something is wrong with it, expensive but dam is it nice.
Installed a set of baker 6 speed gear set on an 05 softtail with a buddy, did it in about 6 hours not bad for a first attempt, the new gear set works great! Oh ya one of the biggest pains were the pipe removal and reinstall.

2400, YIKES!! Why do you guys want to change to a 6 speed? On the last TC RK I rode, it was 200 rpm's difference from my 5 speed. Didn't seem like a big deal to me.
Just curious.

Good to know...the pipes the easy part for me. I have the manual, tools and do a lot of wrenching myself. Did you have to remove the inner primary (haven't looked it up, yet)? If so, seems like that would be the most time consuming.

I need to do something and figured I'd switch it to 6 while I'm there, but not sure. I welcome your guy's feedback. Rebuild vs. Replace? Thanks
