Hi guys, not sure if its just me picking on a new sound to centre out or what but when I hit the throttle on the lower gears where most of the torque is I'm hearing like an aluminum can with ball bearings rattling around and it only accurs at the point where i should be changing gears. I'm not hearing it in the 4th and 5th gear but more 1, 2and 3rd gear. I have my Ultima ignition set to green lite just going off and crank timing mark set at centre of hole TDC front. Does this sound like the normal rocker noise or is it more like pinging?
Rocker noise is always there, it doesn't come and go with the revs... yours sounds (not that I can hear it) like "pinging", easy test is to retard the ign timing by 5 degrees and see if it goes away.

The classic description of detonation is: "It sounds like someone shaking a coffee can with marbles in it." We use the term pinging a lot here, including me. I think as a group, we are implying a milder form of what has always been called detonation in the past. I say that because if you search the old threads, pinging is associated with advanced timing, hot days, heavy loads, bad gas, etc.. What is really important is that pinging,
i.e. detonation is deadly to engines. It has to be adopted, and stopped quickly. Sometimes it is as easy as adding a gas additive, our perhaps more involved, like pulling out an ignition module, but it has to be fixed. Good luck.
Try to get your gas at a station that has a seperate hose for each grade. If you don't the first gallon plus will be whatever was pumped last, which is usually regular. Also weve been telling our customers to think about adding either Star tron, or the new stuff from sta-bil that helps prevent the negative effects of the ethanol. Hope this helps.
