Default 91 FXSTC Tire swap

Hello, so I'm trying to change out my rear solid rim with a laced one I picked up on the cheap and naturally my calibrated eye is out of adjustment and the axle sizes dont match up. Can I pull the hub from the solid wheel and have a shop press it into the new one? Or do I get the laced wheel, that has a smaller axle size, drilled to accept my axle. I know something has to be done but dont know which direction to head in. Thanks

Welcome to HDF from the UK. What year is the laced wheel you have? Your bike uses 3/4" axles and tapered roller bearings. From what you say I guess you have bought a later wheel with sealed ball bearings? Confirm what you have and we can let you know how you stand.

Thanks I've watched this forum for awhile but never had questions till now. The box's sticker says 2000 and later touring models. I pulled my tire this morning and placed the other in its place and that's when I noticed my axle is to big.

That makes life complicated! Your new wheel has 1" sealed ball bearings, which have a larger OD than the 3/4" tapered bearings in your old wheel. This means the central holes in your current rotor and pulley are not large enough to fit your new wheel. It is possible to replace the current 1" bearings with 3/4", but you may find the hub is not exactly the same width as your old wheel, so your brake caliper doesn't line up with your rotor.

In other words that 2000 wheel is not a simple bolt-in replacement wheel. You really need an earlier spec tapered bearing wheel for a simple replacement.

Modern Harley axles are 3/4", 1" or 25mm. Your 91 should have 3/4" axle...if your new wheel uses a smaller axle ...it's not a Harley wheel(or it's really old) regardless of what the box says...you can put any wheel in a box...look at the wheel itself...should have a manufacturer and part number stamped on it.

The part number stamped on the rim correlates to a 16in X 3in harley wheel. 43085-97 I spoke to a service department and the hub assembly is the difference between them. they are not interchangeable. No big problem got a screaming good deal so no real time lost except the hour and a half to pull the old tire and put it back on.

If you got it at that good of a price time to list it on ebay or something or advertise for a swap in the classifieds. I put a deuce wheel on my 93 an everything went ok, just had to get different spacers, getting the brake in was the b*tch.
