Default hitting reserve at 70 miles

Is there something I'm not getting? I'm afraid to keep riding after I hit reserve, it may run out of gas with 3 gallons left in the tank.

Has it always done this or is this new? If you know you have enough gas I would drain the tank and check the petcock and tank. Had a buddies 95 wide glide do this. About 50 or so mile he would hit reserve because junk in the tank would clog up the petcock.

Default new purchase?

Is this a new purchase? If so, you have to fill both halves of the tank. Plugged fuel valve screen purhaps?

Perhaps PO had the petcock off and when he reinstalled it he threaded it in too far so reserve is needed much too soon.

This I kinda doubt as my petcock is threaded all the way in.

I am more inclined to believe he is only filling one side as that is what I did when I first got mine.

yeah folks, this is a new purchase. I hit reserve on way home from dealer around 70 miles, filled it up and reset the clock, hit 70 miles again and same thing. Dont ya love finding all the hidden problems in an old bike? Allready I've found out two of the internal threads for windshield mount are junk.

When you are filling up do you take off both gas caps or only one?

How much gas did you put in?

Hang on a second? Am I supposed to fill both sides?

True enough, on my wifes Heritage I'm sure it would take quite a while for the fuel from the right to go over to the left if the left wasn't full as well. She generally fills the left, puts cap on and then fills the right.
