Default MU90-16 or MT90-16 Dunlop Elite 3 Rear

I have a 98 Fatboy and like my Dunlop Elite 3 tires, but thinking about a new rear soon. I currently run the MT90-16 rear with a 1/2 inch of clearance between tire and upper belt guard.

Do you think the MU90-16 will fit just fine, I'm thinking it will, but want to confirm.

Also, is the MU90-16 any taller than the MT90-16, I had read elsewhere it was, but I'm not sure I believe that.

Anyway, the specs from Jake Wilson are listed below and your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Well heck, sometimes I'm just not that bright. I just went out to the garage and looked again finding the belt to tire clearance is less than the belt guard to tire clearance.

I have about five millimeters clearance there instead of the half inch I thought, and that is just not enough, so I guess I answered my own question and maybe this will help someone else.

Although your thoughts are still welcomed, my next tire will be another Dunlop Elite 3 MT90-16, as I think the MU90-16 is to close to rubbing or would be rubbing, and a bear to fit in there regardless.

I run MU85's on my Dyna and now the bagger.. The Dyna is tight, can just fit a peice of paper between the belt and tire, but I like the look and feel.. It's .31" wider than the MT90..

Cool

I have run an Avon Venom 140/90 on my FLHS and had to trim the rubber curtain on the inside of the lower belt guard. Baggers don't have an upper guard. I had 3/16" clearance between tyre and belt.

Unfortunately we can't go by tyre brand data. My 140/90 when fitted measured 139mm, but should have been 143mm according to Avon. My later 150/80 measured 153mm but should have been 150mm! My current 160/70 measures 167mm but should be 166mm, which is the closest to spec of any tyre I have measured (I have that on a 4.5" x 17" rim).

Check the data on Dunlop's website, which should be accurate and see if they have an MU85. MT90, MU85 and 150/80 have very similar rolling diameters and will all fit a 3" stock rim.

Thanks, went ahead an ordered the MT90-16 tonight. Although I don't need it now, I will pretty soon.

I have been running 36 in the front, 40 in the rear with wife and 38 without, as per service manual recommendation.

Just wondering what you guys are running, although the above has worked well for me with the Dunlop Elite 3's.

Avon Venoms is the answer, Dunlops and road snakes makes your butt suck seat, save money from not buying underwear. This opinion outta start a debate

140's will work with no work, 150's is a whole bunch of work and paper thin clearances

Honestly, I hear stuff like that quite a bit on this site... But, only having ridden Dunlop's, I cant make a comparisson. Quite frankly, I still have no complaints.. The rear wear's a little funny from the highway driving, but I've never had a situation where I felt the tire was not doing its job until it got down past the wear bars. Its not like I'm just a straight liner or only ride one road, either. I travel 120mi per day on the highway at 80 or so and as many back roads as I can. I even rode the dragon on my Wide Glide with a 402 that was about 20%, just a few months ago, and it did just fine... The Dunlops are made in USA and have been factory installed for years. So far, its been a good enough reason for me to stick with them.. I'm just not seeing it..

It may be not all Dunlops are created equally.

I noticed a huge performance difference between the stock Harley Dunlop and Elite 3 which lasts me a whole lot longer too.

I love em, balance out well, plenty sticky and stable, thick sidewall that stays on the rim, and they kinda taste like chicken.

But then again, I have not tried an Avon or Metzler on my bike either.

Avon is revamping their range of bike tyres and the Venoms have transmogrified into Cobras recently.

You won't 'see it' unless you try! I have ridden new Harleys since the 70s and have always found my way back to Avons. Why? The stock tyres (you should have tried Goodyears FFS) have been black and round, but that is where their qualities end! Other brands have superior compliance giving a better smoother ride, as well as better grip and stability.
