Checking RPM
Well this is late, but maybe it'll help someone out.
There's an app (Android only) designed for measuring idle speed from the exhaust sound. It's $0.99.

You could also try an inductive tachometer from amazon or ebay. They cost about $10-$15. They have a wire that wraps around the spark plug wire and picks up the signal each time the spark plug fires. From my testing it seems that the single fire carbureted sportsters use multi-spark at low RPM, so make sure to choose the right setting. It should be easy to figure out based on the reading and what it sounds like.
